Autism in females isn’t rare.
It’s systematically missed & filtered out.

Autism is typically cited as being 4:1 male-to-female. However, this ratio may be driven less by biology than by how we recognize, diagnose, and study autism.

Large-scale analyses suggest that:

The true s*x ratio may be much closer to parity—or even female-leaning.

Up to 80% of autistic females may remain undiagnosed by age 18.

Standardized diagnostic tools and research cutoffs disproportionately exclude autistic females, even when they already have a community diagnosis.

Social camouflaging and more internalized presentations reduce visibility in both clinics and research settings

The result is a feedback loop:
Girls are less likely to be recognized → less likely to meet tool-based thresholds → less likely to be included in research → and therefore less likely to shape how autism is defined in the first place.

If our diagnostic frameworks are built around male-normed presentations, we shouldn’t be surprised when female autism remains invisible.
