A ganglion cyst is a sac filled with a jellylike fluid that originates from a tendon sheath or joint capsule. Although they most often occur on the wrist, they also frequently develop on the foot—usually on the top. The exact cause of ganglion cysts is unknown, but they may arise from trauma—whether a single event or repetitive microtrauma. Orthotics are medical devices often customized and prescribed by a foot and ankle surgeon. They’re different from shoe inserts and arch supports in that they have two functions: Orthotics can be used to accommodate or offload a prominent area, helping aid bursitis, calluses beneath bony prominences and ulcers. They can also help the foot function better in the case of hypermobility seen in tendonitis, fasciitis and other mechanically derived conditions. They can help support and align the foot and lower extremities as well.
