This , the AAP is highlighting the importance of the hepatitis B vaccine at birth. Hepatitis B is a serious liver infection that can be passed from mother to baby at birth. But because of the vaccine, it’s preventable.

The first dose of the hepatitis B vaccine is recommended within 24 hours of birth, giving infants a strong start toward lifelong protection. Pediatricians can answer questions parents have about the hepatitis B vaccine series.

Hepatitis B is a virus that can damage the liver and lead to lifelong health problems. Newborns need the hepatitis B vaccine soon after birth because they might be unknowingly exposed to the virus during labor or shortly after coming home. Around 90% of babies infected at birth will go on to develop chronic hepatitis B. The hepatitis B vaccine is over 95% effective at preventing hepatitis B in children and adults. The AAP recently joined other health groups to challenge the EPA’s decision to roll back updates to the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards, which weakened limits on toxic pollution released from power plants. These reduced safeguards could increase risks for asthma, learning difficulties and other lasting health issues for children. Learn more: https://bit.ly/41HPanH
