Winter solstice, the two moments during the year when the path of the Sun in the sky is farthest south in the Northern Hemisphere and farthest north in the Southern Hemisphere. At the Winter solstice, the Sun travels the shortest path through the sky, and that day, therefore, has the least daylight and the longest night.
The Winter is a time of healing and cultivation and the Winter Solstice is the peak time to nourish and build up our inner emotional and physical energy. The world around us is slowing down and 'hibernating' in order to reset for the new year, and we should too.
Take the time today to sit and be still in the moment, pause for 5 minutes of meditation or yin yoga stretches, or even grab a cup of warming chai tea and revisit some memories from this past year that bring up feelings of gratitude and appreciation and hold onto them for an extra minute or two.
Our emotional and physical health are intimately tied and are meant to ebb and flow with the world around us. The holidays can get stressful this time of year, so take a cue from nature and slow down and rest to keep yourself in balance and healthy through the end of the year. Happy Winter Solstice!
