🌵 is never a good sign on your weather app!

Make sure you are aware of heat recommendations for outdoor activities. Heat illness is TOTALLY PREVENTABLE!

Our local high schools follow the NCHSAA standards in measuring Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT). This factors in not only temperature, but humidity, wind and solar radiation as well. It’s important to know the heat category for outdoor activity. White, Green, Yellow, Red and Black give WBGT ranges and suggest monitoring, timing of water breaks and removal of equipment.

Our Athletic Trainers look ahead for heat projections to help plan and adjust practices to keep our athletes safe in this hot weather.

HYDRATION IS IMPORTANT!!! Make sure you are getting enough water and replacing electrolytes.

Time your hydration. You should drink approximately 20 ounces of water an hour or two before activity, 8 ounces during warm ups, 8 ounces every 15-20 minutes during activity, and fluids with electrolytes to replace what you lose through sweat.

If you are thirsty, it’s too late - you are showing the first sign of dehydration. Drink up!

Exercising in hot weather puts extra stress on your body. Both the air temperature and humidity can increase your core body temperature during exercise. To help cool itself, your body sends more blood to circulate through your skin. This leaves less blood for your muscles, which in turn increases your heart rate.

If the humidity is high, your body faces added stress because sweat doesn't easily evaporate from your skin. Once you stop perspiring in hot, humid conditions, you are at greater risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, or heat stroke.

It’s early in the season and those who were not as active during the summer are more than likely feeling it. It’s important for athletes to know the difference between DOMS and injury. Proper stretching, exercise and hydration are crucial… just sitting out of practice is NOT the answer.
