👶🏾 Congenital Dermal Melanocytosis (Mongolian Spots)👶🏾

Congenital Dermal Melanocytosis are what happens when skin pigmentation gets "trapped" in the deeper layers of skin during the infant's development. When the pigment does not reach the surface, it appears as a gray, greenish, blue, or black mark.

👶🏽 They are not a cause for alarm. No one knows why some babies get them and why some don’t. They cannot be prevented. It’s just a birthmark. They , in and of themselves, do not pose any health risks. Most babies who have them will outgrow them and do not have any health effects from them.

👶🏿 They typically appear on baby’s skin at birth. Sometimes they appear a few week after birth.

👶🏾 when you notice them. Make sure your doctor documents them. Sometimes they are mistaken for bruises.

👶🏾 While no one knows for sure what causes them , some infants are more likely to get them than others; particularly those with darker .

👶🏿They usually occur on the back and buttock area

👶🏽The marks are flat and smooth and may look like bruises. But, unlike bruises, they do not cause pain and are not a result of an injury.

👶🏿The AAP identify Congenital Dermal Melanocytosis in 9.5 percent of Caucasian babies, 46.3 percent of Hispanic babies, and 96.5 percent of black babies.

🆘 Is your silicone pump actually making your life HARDER? 🆘

Silicone pumps (often known as Haakaa pumps, one brand that sells them) are one of the most widely used "inventions" in lactation in the past decade. They seemingly came out of nowhere, and these days it seems like EVERYONE is using them to "catch drips".

What many people *don't* realize is that latching baby to the first side and then suctioning the pump to the second side at the same time can cause multiple problems 🤯

These pumps are called pumps because they DO NOT just catch drips- they actually pull additional milk out of the breast. You're pumping!

Scenario 1: Let's say you latch baby to righty and throw the pump on lefty. Baby finishes eating on righty so you switch baby to lefty.

Suddenly you realize you've taken away the "easy" milk that would have been sitting in lefty. All that "easy" milk is now in the pump.

Baby may fall asleep without truly being full, or may cry and refuse to nurse, so you have to use this pumped milk to top baby off and you've made the feeding process harder on yourself!

If you want to use a silicone pump while nursing, always always always use it when you switch to the SECOND breast (to get out the leftovers from the first breast, so you don’t take easy milk away from baby). This is a great strategy to use the silicone pump to RAISE your milk supply.

Scenario 2: Your baby only ever nurses on one side, so you always latch baby to the first breast and then attach the pump to the second side. Soon you're banking one, two, three ounces per feeding. BUT. This isn't just milk drips. Again, you're pulling extra milk from the breast which means you're increasing your supply and this could cause uncomfortable oversupply and breast swelling which feels like a plug or even mastitis. The more milk you take out, the more milk you make!

Still need a little more help understanding this concept? Or maybe you do not know how to use the silicone pump at all! That's okay. I can help you with that! Come in and see me or book a virtual consultation! Link below! ⬇️
