Liposuction
Fat reduction & body contouring in Asheville, NC
Every person is genetically programmed to accumulate fat in certain ways; a lucky few enjoy an even distribution of body fat and are not affected by unsightly pockets of fat on the abdomen, hips, thighs, or elsewhere. Most of us are not so lucky—we may inherit love handles, a bulge on the belly, or a “double chin.”

Stubborn fat deposits are notoriously difficult to reduce, even with a healthy diet and vigorous exercise, but if you are bothered by excess fat, liposuction can help. This time-tested cosmetic surgery selectively suctions out fat cells to reduce unwanted fat and create a smoother, sleeker body contour.

Why consider liposuction?
Liposuction has remained the most popular cosmetic surgery in the United States for many years—more than 396,000 liposuction procedures were performed in 2015 alone, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. It is a versatile procedure that offers a number of key benefits:

Reduces pockets of stubborn fat that exercise and diet fail to address
Improves body shape and proportions by sculpting away excess fat in select areas
Addresses “problem areas” in a single procedure with lasting results
While non-surgical alternatives may work for some people to reduce the size of a fat bulge, only liposuction allows for precise control over fat reduction and sculpting with predictable, long-lasting results. Liposuction can also help to enhance results of other cosmetic procedures, such as a tummy tuck or male breast reduction.

Choosing Dr. Conway for your liposuction procedure
Dr. Donald Conway has more than 20 years of experience performing liposuction as a board certified plastic surgeon. He also has professional training and experience as a medical illustrator. This unique combination of skills has helped Dr. Conway develop a keen sense of symmetry, proportion, and precision that shines through in his patients’ results.

Additionally, Dr. Conway always performs liposuction in our AAASF accredited surgery center and works with board certified anesthesiologists for your safety.

Where on the body can liposuction be done?
Liposuction is an extremely versatile procedure; Dr. Conway can remove tiny pockets of fat around the underarms as well as smooth out larger bulges around the abdomen. Common areas our Asheville patients request liposuction include, but are not limited to:

Lower belly and flanks
Hips and lower back
Inner or outer thighs
Knees and ankles
Chest and back
Neck or beneath the chin
Am I a good candidate for liposuction?
Liposuction is a fat reduction procedure; it is excellent for reducing pockets of subcutaneous fat (fat beneath the skin) to improve body contours. If you are healthy and happy with your body weight but have certain “problem areas” that bother you, liposuction can offer lasting improvement and a boost in confidence.

You are at or near your ideal body weight. Liposuction will not help you lose weight; no cosmetic procedure can. You will enjoy a safer surgery and more satisfying results if you reach your goal weight several months prior to surgery. Then, liposuction can help you improve your body shape.
You have good skin contraction. Liposuction will not improve sagging, stretched skin. In fact, undergoing liposuction in an area where skin can no longer contract can make the appearance of loose skin worse. If you have excess, sagging skin, a tummy tuck or other body contouring procedure would be more appropriate.
You are a healthy non-smoker. Your safety and results are Dr. Conway’s highest priority; you should only undergo cosmetic surgery if you are in otherwise good health. Smoking increases risks for complications before and after surgery; if you smoke, quit at least 2 months before and after having liposuction.
If you are unsure whether or not you meet these criteria, Dr. Conway will offer clarification at your consultation, helping you understand what results you might expect from liposuction and whether liposuction or another procedure, such as a tummy tuck, will better meet your goals.

About the liposuction procedure
Dr. Conway performs liposuction at the Plastic Surgery Center in Asheville, North Carolina, a fully-accredited private surgery center that is adjacent to his practice office. General anesthesia is provided by a board certified MD anesthesiologist.

Incisions made for liposuction are very small—typically 1cm in length or smaller. Dr. Conway takes care to place incisions in the least conspicuous locations possible, and with proper care resulting scars usually fade beautifully.

Following your liposuction procedure, you will be placed in a compression garment. This helps to control swelling and provides support to the liposuctioned area as it heals. After a brief time in our quiet recovery room, you will be allowed to go home.

Liposuction recovery: what to expect
Liposuction recovery is typically a smooth and relatively quick process for healthy patients who follow Dr. Conway’s instructions for post-operative care. You will be up and walking around the same evening after surgery, although you will mainly want to rest the first couple of days as effects of anesthesia continue to wear off. Pain is usually minimal; with most patients reporting more soreness than pain. Showering is permitted after 1 to 2 days.

If you have a sedentary job, you should be able to return to work within 1 week after your procedure. Jobs and exercise involving lifting or straining should be avoided for about 3 weeks after liposuction surgery. By a month or so after your procedure, you should be ready to resume your normal lifestyle. Dr. Conway may recommend wearing your compression garment for 4 to 6 weeks for optimal skin contraction.

Keep in mind, however, that if you have additional procedures, your recovery may progress at a different rate and/or require additional modifications in your routine. Dr. Conway will explain the recovery process in detail at your consultation.

Do liposuction results last?
Liposuction removes a portion of the fat cells in the treated area. As long as you maintain a stable weight, your results should last for many years. Substantial weight gain in the future will result in additional body fat deposits, so it is important to remain committed to a healthy lifestyle following liposuction.

Body Lift Surgery in Asheville
Post-weight loss body contouring & skin removal surgery
While a person’s body size shrinks with massive weight loss, more often than not, the skin cannot contract to the new, slimmer contours. Excess, hanging skin can be unsightly to an individual, but even more, it can be uncomfortable. If you are bothered by excess, sagging skin on your body, a body lift can help.

Body lifting surgery removes excess, sagging skin from the arms, legs, or torso and reshapes the area to restore a smoother, more aesthetically appealing contour and relieve the discomfort that comes from having skin folds.

Am I a good candidate for a body lift?
Body lifting surgery is intended for patients who are bothered by excess, sagging skin and stretched tissues on the body. It is not a weight loss procedure, nor will it remove a significant amount of fat. A body lift may be a good option if:

You have reached and maintained your goal weight for at least 6 months
You are a healthy non-smoker
Excess skin is causing you physical or emotional discomfort
You understand and accept that body lift incisions will leave scars
Choosing Dr. Conway as your plastic surgeon
Body lifting is a complex surgery that requires an experienced plastic surgeon. Dr. Donald Conway is board certified in plastic surgery, and he has worked with post-weight loss patients for more than 20 years. He finds body lift surgery particularly rewarding, as he sees the dramatic improvements in comfort and confidence his patients experience.

Dr. Conway approaches body lift procedures as both a restorative and aesthetic. He applies his background as a medical illustrator, along with extensive surgical expertise, to achieve naturally appealing improvements in body contour while prioritizing a patient’s safety and well-being.

Body lift options in Asheville
A body lift is not one specific procedure, but rather an operation tailored to a patient’s anatomy and goals. A post-weight loss body lift can be limited to removing excess skin only on the upper arms, or it can be as extensive as removing skin and lifting tissues around the entire torso and lower body. Dr. Conway tailors the procedure plan to your needs. Your body lift in Asheville may include one or more of the following procedures.
Significant weight loss can often leave the abdominal muscles and skin to appear stretched and sagging. A tummy tuck addresses these issues, repairing connective tissue to tighten the abdominal muscles and removing excess, sagging skin on the belly. The goal is to restore a flatter, smoother shape to the midsection.

Many post-weight loss patients benefit from an extended tummy tuck, which addresses sagging skin and lax muscles on the upper and lower abdomen. While an extended tummy tuck requires a longer incision than a traditional tummy tuck, it also creates dramatic improvement in abdominal shape.

Thigh & buttock lift
If you once carried excess weight in your lower body, you may now have loose skin gathered around your buttocks or thighs. You may feel self-conscious wearing shorts or swimsuits, and many even have a hard time finding jeans or pants that fit comfortably. Thigh lift and buttock lift surgery address sagging tissues on the lower body to remove burdensome excess skin and lift underlying tissues into a more youthful, aesthetically pleasing position.

Incisions for a thigh lift or buttock lift procedure depend on the extent of surgery as well as how the sagging skin is distributed. Whenever possible, Dr. Conway places incisions within the natural folds of the body, so resulting scars will be as inconspicuous to others as possible.
An upper arm lift (brachioplasty) eliminates hanging, loose skin (sometimes called “bat wings”) from the upper arms to restore a smoother, slimmer and firmer appearance to the arms. Dr. Conway makes an incision on the underside of the upper arm, removes excess skin, and tightens sagging tissues. Dr. Conway will discuss your preference in location for the scars.

Circumferential body lift
Patients who have a significant amount of loose, hanging skin around the torso may benefit from a circumferential body lift, which removes excess skin and tissues around the circumference of the abdomen and lower body. This is the most extensive body lifting procedure, and requires a more lengthy recovery than other, less dramatic procedure.

A circumferential body lift involves an incision running around the lower abdomen, just above the hip bones. While the resulting scar will be a long, thin line running around your body, Dr. Conway takes care to place incisions as low as possible so you can conceal the scar beneath most clothing.

Body lift surgery & recovery
Since Dr. Conway tailors a post-weight loss body lift to patient’s needs, the surgery and recovery process can vary significantly from patient to patient. Dr. Conway performs body lift procedure in our fully-accredited, on-site private surgery suite, which is equipped to hospital standards. General anesthesia is provided by our our experienced anesthesiology team, led by a board certified MD anesthesiologist. More extensive procedures may require an overnight stay in our surgery recovery room or in the hospital.

Recovery timelines and restrictions vary depending on the individual and the procedures performed. If you are only having an upper arm lift, you may be able to return to light activity and desk work within 1 week. Extended tummy tucks and circumferential body lifts often require 2 to 4 weeks away from activity other than light walking. Dr. Conway will provide detailed instructions at your consultation.

Life after body lift surgery
A body lift can be a rewarding procedure to help you better enjoy the benefits of your weight loss and live free from the burden of excess body skin. To ensure your scars heal as neatly and inconspicuously as possible, it is important to follow Dr. Conway’s recovery instructions and keep your scars protected from the sun.

Results after body lift surgery are intended to last for many years, and they should, so as long as you maintain a stable weight. Future weight fluctuations or pregnancy are likely to alter some of the improvements made after a body lift, so if you are planning to become pregnant in the future, be sure to talk to Dr. Conway about your goals. Additionally, nothing can stop the natural aging process, and over the years you may notice an increase in skin laxity.

BOTOXÂź Injections in Asheville
About BOTOXÂź Cosmetic & DysportÂź in Asheville
Most people in Asheville are familiar with the name “BOTOX,” but many would be surprised to learn just how popular—and effective—BOTOX¼ Cosmetic and Dysport¼ injections can be for treating certain facial wrinkles. Both of these FDA approved injectable neurotoxins can help to soften bothersome frown lines, brow furrows, crow’s feet and more, helping you look more youthful and better refreshed just days after your first treatment.
How can Botox or Dysport help me refresh my appearance?
If you feel like lines around your eyes or brow make you look concerned or angry, BOTOX or Dysport can help soften your appearance and provide a more youthful look. Both can also help create a smoother, better refreshed appearance in other areas too by treating the following issues:

Moderate to severe crow’s feet or lines on the outer eyes
Brow furrows or a lowered brow appearance
Vertical lines above the upper lip
Chin dimples or “cobblestoning” on the chin
How BOTOX and Dysport work
Many bothersome facial wrinkles are attributable in large part to habitual muscle movements. Glabellar lines (a.k.a. “frown lines” or “11’s”) and brow furrows get worse with years of scrunching the brow muscles; crow’s feet are worsened with squinting.

BOTOX contains a neurotoxin called botulinum type A that blocks nerve impulses within the specific muscles responsible for such contractions. When injected, the muscle relaxes, preventing you from subconsciously making those frowning or squinting motions and thus softening the appearance of these lines. Dysport works in almost exactly the same way; it simply contains a slightly different formulation of botulinum type A.

What is treatment like?
BOTOX and Dysport injections are performed in Dr. Conway’s office at Plastic Surgery Center of Asheville. Appointments take only about 30 minutes to complete. A topical anesthetic may be given to ease discomfort during injection, but most patients find treatment very tolerable as the needles used to inject BOTOX and Dysport are very thin—you will feel a pinch at the injection site.

No real downtime is required after treatment, although you should refrain from strenuous exercise for the rest of the day. Occasionally, there may be bruising, swelling or soreness at the injection site. These effects should subside within a few days after treatment.
If you do not see results immediately, do not worry! This is normal. Results are noticeable a few days after treatment and are typically in full effect within one week. The wrinkle-reducing effects of BOTOX last about 3 to 4 months on average; Dysport tends to last closer to 4 months. You can return to Dr. Conway for follow-up treatments to maintain the effects.

BOTOX vs. Dysport: what is the difference?
Both BOTOX and Dysport use botulinum toxin type A as an active ingredient. They work similarly to treat the same types of facial wrinkles, and both achieve similar results. While neither product is “better” than the other, there are a few minor differences between the two.

Dysport costs a little less per unit. However, since the unit measurement for BOTOX and Dysport are not the same, it is not necessarily true that Dysport will be cheaper than BOTOX in every case.
Dysport takes effect a little more quickly than BOTOX. The difference is not substantial; while Dysport patients notice effects after about 2 days on average, the full effects of BOTOX are typically in place just 4 to 7 days after treatment.
Depending on your anatomy and goals, one product may be more suitable for your needs than the other. Dr. Conway and his team are experienced using both and will help you decide which product is right for you.

Are there risks or side effects with BOTOX and Dysport?
Both BOTOX and Dysport are very safe when administered by an experienced, qualified provider. For natural yet noticeable effects, the correct dosage must be injected in a precise location. A board certified plastic surgeon who has extensive medical training and experience and in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy, will be much better equipped to deliver a safe, successful outcome than a spa technician.

Serious side effects are rare with a qualified provider; the most common side effects are mild and temporary bruising, swelling, or tenderness at the injection site.

Facelift
Rhytidectomy in Asheville, NC
While some signs of aging can be concealed by clothing or makeup, the jowling, sagging skin, and deep folds of an aging face and neck are harder to hide. That does not mean that you have to settle for an appearance that makes you look older or more tired than you feel.
Facelift surgery, also called rhytidectomy, lifts and repositions sagging facial and neck tissues for a more youthful, vibrant appearance that better matches the way you feel on the inside. With lasting results and well-placed scars, a facelift can help restore confidence in your appearance so you can more fully enjoy life.

Why choose Dr. Conway as my facelift surgeon?
A surgeon’s skill, experience, and aesthetic sensibility make a difference in your results. To Dr. Conway, a successful facelift should be undetectable by others as surgery. A natural looking facelift requires a keen eye for symmetry, balance, and tension within the tiny variations in an individual’s facial contours.

Prior to becoming a board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Conway was a medical illustrator, creating visual guides used by surgeons to study the anatomy and intricacies of the human body. This required him to develop a thorough understanding of anatomy as well as an impeccable sense of proportion, detail and symmetry. Combining artistic talent and surgical skill, Dr. Conway focuses on details in a patient’s unique features to produce decidedly natural facelift results.

How do I know if a facelift will help me?
Patients often come into our office with this question first and foremost in their minds. Many are unhappy with jowling and skin laxity but wonder if they are too young for a facelift. Others are bothered by wrinkles around the eyes and mouth and wonder if a facelift is their only option. The truth is, there is no right (or wrong) age for a facelift—Dr. Conway has worked with facelift patients in their early 40s as well as those well into their 70s.

In general, a facelift may be a good option if the following applies to you:

You are bothered by jowling or sagging skin around the cheeks, neck or jawline» A facelift targets these signs of aging by removing excess skin and lifting the deep structural tissues into a more naturally youthful position
You notice deep folds around the nose and mouth» By lifting sagging tissues around the mid-face, a facelift will smooth deeper furrows
Your chin has lost definition» A facelift removes stretched, sagging skin from beneath the chin, creating a smoother, more graceful neckline and refining the jawline
You feel that an aging appearance is holding you back socially or professionally» By helping you look younger, fitter, and better refreshed, a facelift can boost your self-confidence and help others to get the right impression about you.
Dr. Conway will help you decide the right procedure plan for you based on your unique anatomy as well as what changes you would most like to see in your face, whether or not that includes a facelift.

Facelift vs. Non-Surgical Facial Rejuvenation
With so many wonderful new options to smooth wrinkles, tighten skin and rejuvenate the face without surgery, you may wonder if it is still necessary to have a facelift. While non-surgical facial rejuvenation procedures can help you look younger, they cannot substitute for the dramatic lifting possible from a surgical facelift. With that said, Botox, fillers, and laser skin resurfacing are excellent complementary treatments to facelift surgery, allowing Dr. Conway to offer many options.

How much does facelift surgery in Asheville cost?
Costs for facelift surgery vary depending on the individual patient and the procedures performed. If you are having a limited incision facelift alone, for example, surgery will cost less than if you are having a standard facelift with a neck lift and cosmetic eyelid surgery.

On average, a facelift with Dr. Conway in Asheville will cost between $4,000 and $10,000, which may include brow lift or eyelid surgery. Your total fee includes surgical fees, operating room expenses, and anesthesia fees. At your personal consultation with Dr. Conway, you will be provided with a detailed fee quote, which is good for 6 months after your consultation date.

How long will facelift results last?
Dr. Conway performs advanced facelift surgery techniques that are designed to last for years. Excess skin removed during a facelift is gone for good, and the underlying tissues are repositioned. The natural aging process will continue, and over time you may notice some reduction in skin laxity and volume loss. The good news is, that any visible aging after a facelift will be starting with your “aging clock” set back about 10 years, so you will continue to look years younger at any age than you would have without a facelift.

Patients who have a facelift in their 40s or 50s may enjoy the results of their initial facelift for several decades before choosing to have a second procedure to refine their appearance. In many cases, Dr. Conway can perform a secondary facelift using limited incisions and a less extensive procedure with a shorter recovery.

What to expect at your consultation
Each patient considering a facelift begins by meeting Dr. Conway for a personal consultation. During this appointment, you will meet Dr. Conway’s patient coordinator, Maria, and his nurse, the same team who will be working with you throughout your plastic surgery experience. Dr. Conway will begin by listening to your reasons for considering surgery and what you hope to achieve.

After examining your face, he will explain your procedure options and answer any questions you may have. He may also take “before” photographs to help him devise his surgical plan. After meeting with Dr. Conway, you will be given an individualized fee quote. If you wish, you can talk with our financing coordinator to go over your options for payment or financing. If you are ready, you can schedule surgery, or if you prefer, take time to think about your options.

About facelift surgery with Dr. Conway
Dr. Conway performs facelift surgery at Asheville Plastic Surgery Center’s on-site, fully accredited surgical suite. Your procedure may be done with general anesthesia or intravenous sedation and local anesthesia, or quite often can be done with oral sedation and local anesthesia, depending on your needs and the extent of the procedure. General or intravenous anesthesia is administered by a board certified MD anesthesiologist.

Dr. Conway will begin surgery by making small incisions within the natural creases in front of and behind the earlobe. For more extensive procedures, incisions may also extend past the ears, hidden behind the hairline. If you are having a neck lift at the same time, he may also make a small incision just beneath the chin. Through these incisions, Dr. Conway will separate the skin from the underlying facial tissues; doing so allows him to tighten and reposition the deeper facial tissues and then redrape the skin with a natural tension, thus avoiding a “pulled” look. Your procedure plan may include fat removal under the chin and possible fat injections to restore lost facial volume, Dr. Conway will perform them at this time.

Excess skin from the cheeks, jowls, and neck, will be removed, and Dr. Conway finishes the procedure by re-draping the remaining skin in a natural position.

What to Expect After Facelift Surgery
You will go home from your procedure wearing a compression dressing around your forehead and over the ears and underneath the chin (many think of the head-dresses worn by the nuns in the Sound of Music).

You will likely feel sore and notice a tight sensation around your face initially. Bruising and swelling are also common; these effects should begin to gradually subside after a few days. You will need to sleep in an inclined position, on your back for the first few days after surgery, and refrain from showering until your follow-up appointment with Dr. Conway, where your bandage will be removed (usually 1-2 days after surgery).

With proper aftercare, facelift patients are typically back to non-strenuous daily activities and feel ready to go out in public within 2 weeks of surgery. Most of the swelling and bruising should be gone in 10-14 days, at which time remaining discoloration can be concealed by camouflage makeup. It is important not to lift or strain for 3-4 weeks following surgery, even if you feel up to it. Your incisions are continuing to heal at this time, and following Dr. Conway’s instructions will help to ensure optimal final results.

Tummy Tuck
Abdominoplasty in Asheville, North Carolina
Have you done everything right to get a flat, smooth and toned abdomen only to find that a healthy diet and exercise have done nothing to improve sagging skin and protruding muscles? A tummy tuck may be the solution for you.
A tummy tuck tightens loose abdominal muscles and removes excess, stretched skin for a firmer, flatter abdomen and more aesthetically pleasing, natural body proportions.
What results can I expect from a tummy tuck?
Am I a good candidate for a tummy tuck?

Tummy tuck vs. liposuction
What results can I expect from a tummy tuck?
Pregnancy, aging or weight fluctuations throughout life can cause abdominal muscles and skin to irreversibly stretch, leaving you with a protruding belly or sagging skin folds and stretch marks on the lower abdomen—issues which a healthy lifestyle can do little to address.
If you have not been in the shoes of a tummy tuck patient, you may not realize that a tummy tuck can improve comfort as much as appearance. Excess skin and loose abdominal muscles can make it difficult to find clothing that fits comfortably, particularly when it comes to jeans or fitted skirts. Sometimes, the abdominal muscles can stretch to the point where they weaken and separate vertically, leading to back pain and other problems.
Abdominoplasty can help correct these problems, along with giving you a more aesthetically pleasing abdominal shape.
Am I a good candidate for a tummy tuck?
In general, a tummy tuck may be recommended if you are experiencing the following:
You are bothered by excess, hanging skin on your abdomen
Your abdominal muscles protrude unnaturally
Form-fitting clothing such as swimsuits and jeans are uncomfortable due to the shape of your belly
Exercise and a healthy diet have not improved the shape of your abdomen to your satisfaction
You are at a healthy, stable body weight and do not smoke
You do not plan on becoming pregnant in the future
Tummy tuck procedure
Dr. Conway performs tummy tuck surgery in our private, on-site Asheville surgery suite, which is fully accredited by the AAAASF. Anesthesia is provided by a board certified MD anesthesiologist for your safety.
Dr. Conway will begin by making a horizontal incision between the hips, just above the p***c bone. For more extensive tummy tucks, a second incision may be made around the belly button. After loosening the overlying skin along the abdomen from the muscle, Dr. Conway will reshape the muscles into a tighter position, placing permanent sutures in the fascia (the layer of connective tissue over top of the muscle) to hold the muscles into their improved shape.
Next, Dr. Conway will remove excess skin and redrape the remaining skin over the muscles, repositioning the belly button to maintain a natural appearance. All of this is done through the initial one or two incisions, which are then closed with sutures.
Dr. Conway’s approach to tummy tuck surgery
Asheville board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Conway approaches tummy tuck surgery as both a restorative and aesthetic procedure, applying his artistic sensibility and using scar-minimizing surgical techniques for naturally attractive results and optimal recovery. He finds abdominoplasty particularly rewarding, as he is able to help patients feel happy with their bodies, sometimes for the first time in years.
Tummy tuck recovery
Most tummy tuck patients go home the same day as surgery, although more complex procedures may require an overnight stay in the hospital or our surgery center. Depending on the individual, drains may be placed to collect fluid that naturally migrates to the operated area. This is an off-putting idea for some, but drains can improve your comfort and help to accelerate recovery. Dr. Conway will give you instructions for care, and drains are typically removed 1-2 weeks after surgery.
Patients recovering from a tummy tuck typically experience the greatest discomfort during the first 2-3 days, and then start to feel noticeably better each day. Dr. Conway will prescribe pain medication to help you manage discomfort. You will be allowed to get up and walk around the house the day after surgery, but you may require assistance from a responsible adult at first. It is recommended that you have a spouse or other caretaker available at home for the first week to help you with basic tasks.
Light activities, including a return to sedentary work, can usually be resumed about 2 weeks after surgery. Any task involving lifting, bending, straining, or aerobic activity, including lifting small children, must be avoided for 6 weeks after a tummy tuck. Parents of small children should arrange for childcare prior to having a tummy tuck. Most tummy tuck patients begin a gradual return to their normal exercise routine about 6 weeks after surgery.
Does a tummy tuck leave visible scars?
Scars are unavoidable after abdominoplasty, so Dr. Conway takes great care to ensure scars are as thin and inconspicuous as possible by placing incisions very low on the abdomen, below the natural bikini line. With time and proper care, scars typically fade so they are more difficult to detect, even without clothing.
For very extensive tummy tucks, where a large amount of skin needs to be removed, a vertical scar is sometimes necessary. This is most commonly the case for abdominoplasty following massive weight loss. In Dr. Conway’s experience, however, these patients find that a visible scar is worth it to enjoy a life free from the burden of excess abdominal skin. You can see what you might expect from tummy tuck scarring by viewing our before and after tummy tuck patient gallery.
Tummy tuck vs. liposuction
Many patients are unsure which body contouring procedure they should choose just by the name alone. Both liposuction and abdominoplasty can significantly improve the shape of the midsection, but they are not interchangeable procedures.
Liposuction specifically targets excess, subcutaneous fat (fat beneath the skin) to create a leaner, more attractive body shape. Since liposuction will do nothing to address sagging skin or protruding musculature, it is best suited to patients who have good skin elasticity and who do not present significant loss of muscle tone.
A tummy tuck addresses problem areas that liposuction cannot. While abdominoplasty will not remove a significant amount of fat, it is the most effective surgery for restoring muscle tone and removing excess, sagging skin and helping to reduce abdominal stretch marks.
When appropriate, liposuction and a tummy tuck can be combined for an enhanced improvement in body contours.
