Deerfield's very own Dave and Ruthie Stagner are out there doing such good work to support the incredible hospice services of Four Seasons! Our foundation prioritizes volunteer engagement and these two get gold stars for investing their time and energy with one of our favorite strategic partners! Today we celebrate you!!

Since February 2025, David and Ruth Stagner have been dedicated volunteers at our Hospice Home Store in Arden. As longtime supporters of Four Seasons, they wanted to deepen their commitment by giving their time and talents to help advance compassionate care in our community. Residents of Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community, David and Ruth love sharing the mission of the Hospice Home Store with their neighbors—encouraging them to volunteer, donate, and shop in support of hospice care across western North Carolina.

Happy National Volunteer Month!

Today, we’re celebrating the incredible hearts of our Deerfield residents—especially our Meals on Wheels volunteers, who have been feeding vulnerable seniors in our community for an amazing 25 years!

Volunteerism is woven into the fabric of life at Deerfield. Our residents bring their passion and purpose to service every day, both on and off campus. Last year alone, residents recorded an incredible 23,563 volunteer hours! That generosity translates to $819,781 worth of service to our community.

We are endlessly grateful for our residents who show us what it means to care, to serve, and to give back. Thank you for being the heart of Deerfield and making a lasting difference, one volunteer hour at a time.

At this time of year, the faith traditions celebrated across campus unite us in significant ways. From the beautiful Passover Seder served this week to the Lenten luncheon series offered through St. Giles chapel, members of our community join together to share treasured faith traditions or experience new ones.

For those preparing to celebrate Easter this Sunday, Rev. Missy Harris, a member of Deerfield’s Spiritual Life team, had this to share about this Lenten season:

“We began this journey into Lent by taking the ashes from last year’s palms and smudging them upon our foreheads, imposing a black cross, a visible mark and reminder that we are dust and to dust we will return. We could not see the cross upon our own foreheads. We could only see the crosses that were borne by our neighbors. May we always have eyes to see what our neighbors bear.”

Residents enjoyed a visit to Stepp’s Hillcrest Orchard to see the tulip fields in bloom. They heard a short talk from the farmers walked through the tulip field, and some picked bouquets to take home. Everyone also enjoyed checking out the farm store with its jams, jellies and other local products.

Wednesday offered a meaningful moment for our community as we unveiled the new emblems on our Giving Tree. Together, we celebrated the lifetime generosity of our residents and the incredible impact their giving continues to make. It was a joy to watch neighbors gather around the tree, finding their new leaves and reflecting on the stories they represent.

We also had the opportunity to highlight two remarkable programs supported by our donors: A Gathering Place, Deerfield's new day respite program and strategic partner Four Seasons' Angel Fund, providing hospice care for patients in Buncombe County who are unable to pay for the cost of services. There are both powerful examples of compassion in action. Moments like these remind us that generosity grows deep roots and continues to flourish in the lives it touches. 🌳💚

Our campus is a little more beautiful today after Deerfield welcomed 21 members of Christ School students and faculty for a volunteer experience at St. Giles Chapel Wednesday. The students, who routinely volunteer with local organizations as part of their academic experience, did an exceptional job of preparing the chapel gardens for spring. We are grateful for their hard work, diligence and the energy and fun they brought to campus, just in time for Holy Week. We wish these hard-working students a great end of term and hope we can welcome you back on campus again soon!

Mother Nature brought her full repertoire to the Deerfield campus over this past week, from snowy and freezing to Saturday’s rain over campus (pictured here) to 80 and sunny on Sunday, perhaps to let us know that she’s ready to shake off winter as well. Spring is ready to put on a show and we are more than ready to welcome it!
