The Sisters of Mercy have always been evolving to meet the needs of the time, serving WNC since their arrival in 1900. Three Sisters set out to built a school but discovered the need was for a tuberculosis sanitarium. This led to the formation of St. Joseph's Hospital which was operated by the Sisters for nearly 100 years until its sale in 1998. Today, local, not-for-profit Mercy Urgent Care has gone from not offering telemedicine visits to providing safe covid testing along with continued care/treatment of non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries at eight locations, seven days a week, since the pandemic began.
