Asheville Women's Counseling

Asheville Women's Counseling Contact me above for your free 10-15 minute phone consultation. I accept BlueCross/Blue Shield insu Hi there. I've used it for over 13 years now.

This is the private practice for Lisa Harris, LCSW, with emphasis on women's issues such as grief/loss, role changes, caregiving, pain and ability loss, sexual/physical abuse recovery, other traumas, relationships, breakups/divorces, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and healthy lifestyle changes. Many come to counseling with me to simply figure out who they are, what they want and how to make it happen. Of course I welcome men, couples and older teen clients, also. I use EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) where I guide you to tap on your own acupressure points while we work to release stuck emotions, loss and trauma events. It helps the person using it to get grounded, feel the emotion while delivering a self-calming approach. The memory changes from an emotionally-charged and physical one to simply a mental picture of what happened. This may happen the first time using it in a session with me (some nightmares and events can heal this fast) or take several months of use. My clients who like it say it brings relief quickly and can be used at home when in distress. My practice is LGBTQIA-affirmative and respectful of all people from all spiritual paths and lifestyles.

This is a variation on the Serenity Prayer, used to guide those of us in recovery from any addictive substance or behavior. What can look like worry for others can turn into ā€œPlease Change because I’m uncomfortable, sad, anxious or angry about what you’re doing!ā€ā€¦as in—when you change then I’ll be ok!

I like this version as a reminder that I cannot change anyone, it’s not my job nor is it within my capacity. I can love, I can help when someone wants me to or I can walk away from the relationship, if that’s best for me. There’s real freedom and peace in this. And those around us have more of a chance at discovering IF they need to make some changes if we’re not trying to force them into itā€¦šŸ’œ

From Asheville Grief Specialist colleague Tamara Hanna:

New FREE, monthly support group being offered through NCVAN (North Carolina Victim Assistance Network):
Navigating Grief After Opioid Loss
An Online Support Group for Loved Ones of Opioid Victims
Tuesday, July 27th from 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM (Registration is required.)

This org also offers support groups, financial resources, and other supports for loved ones of homicide victims, including a Spanish-speaking support group.

*NCVAN is currently offering support groups for loved ones of homicide victims online due to the COVID-19 crisis. We believe doing so is the best way to continue offering support while safeguarding our staff's health and well-being and the victims/survivors we serve.

Please Note: I am not taking new clients at this time.

BUT I am encouraging everyone to take care of their mental health right now. Reach out to those who care about you if you’re hurting, ask for help, see a therapist, contact me in Asheville if you need help finding one, do what you can to love on yourself and find ways to be in the moment. Most of all, Be Gentle with You. The mind likes those negative self-talk habits and if you wouldn’t be that cruel to others, maybe you can bypass saying that crap for yourself.

If you believe you have depression or some form of anxiety. Please seek help. I did in my 20s and still do from time-to-time and that has made all the difference (shout out to Robert Frost).

Hugs to all, Lisa

This article is focused on how to grieve while working but it also offers a very concise ā€œhow toā€ for the grieving process. And I dig the quote at the beginning:

Grieving is like breathing, but we act like we have to hold our breath.....It's a natural process and if you pretend like you don't have to do it or that it doesn't exist, you'll end up choking or passing out.ā€ (Dr. Shatavia Alexander Thomas, an Arizona Therapist)

Grief is an unpredictable and unavoidable part of life. Mental health experts share coping strategies for mourning when curling up in bed isn't an option.

This sweet meme right here. Taboo be gone! ā€œI’m in therapyā€ to me means you’ve found your inner best self who is craving a more workable life. Go you! That’s a display of real strength and integrity.

I’ve been saying for awhile-if there was dysfunction/trauma in your childhood then someone changed your brain without your permission!! Time to take your brain back. And that is just so very sweet.....

Boom. This is an absolute truth that any victim of abuse has a right to fiercely defend and claim for themselves. It was not your fault-you weren’t careless, stupid, ā€œasking for it,ā€ or anything else-you were victim of a crime. Period.

If you need help OurVoice in Asheville is an excellent agency that offers first education, groups and legal advocacy. I provide individual counseling for the trauma/PTSD symptoms that often accompany abuse or assault of any kind but especially the fear, anger, shame and physical symptoms.

There are many caring and effective trauma counselors here so if I don’t seem to be a fit for you, please continue your search. You deserve nothing but support, understanding and tools for recovery. There is a way to find healing and closure from sexual assault.

Week 7 of our 52 Weeks of Prevention campaign in which we solve the mystery of who is to blame for r**e. Hint: It's always the perpetrator.
