I have a deep conviction in the power of psychotherapy as I have experienced it directly. I’m passionate in my belief that I cannot give something away that I do not already have. Therefore, I am deeply committed to doing my own inner work and embodying every construct I prescribe for my patients. I do this work because I am a wounded healer and I’m inspired by stewarding others, and their families, to co-create greater motivation in their quest to achieve inner wisdom, sustainability and well-being, which allows for the capacity to thrive.

I’m incredibly grateful that Dr. Anna Lembke, MD, Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University, has written seminal document entitled, “The New Doctors Opinion”, for the 12-step program, S*x and P**n Addicts Anonymous. Dr. Lembke is the author of the now infamous book, Dopamine Nation, where she explicitly talks about Compulsive S*xual Behavior Disorder and all Process/Behavioral Addictions (i.e. Gambling Disorder, Internet Gaming Disorder, Binge Eating Disorder, Bulimia and Anorexia, etc.)

As both a professional and a “garden variety” recovering addict in longer term recovery/discovery from multiple addictions, I’ve been eagerly awaiting for years for a well respected neuroscientists and Addictions expert to write a modernized, up to date, scientific document that incorporates the latest neuroscience to enhance the work of the infamous Dr. Silkworth’s, “Dr.’s Opinion”, in the Alcoholics Anonymous “Big Book” (i.e. basic text), and expounds on the cutting edge neuroscience on not only Substance Use Disorders, but Process/Behavioral Addictive Disorders. Dr. Lembke was asked to write a “New Dr’s Opinion” by the 12 step group, S*x and P**n Addicts Anonymous. There are two versions, an abridged and unabridged. Both are seminal reads and I have posted the links to both below. She, once again, nails it as good as anyone I have read, about what occurs in not only Substance Use Disorder, but all Process/Behavioral Addictions such as Compulsive S*xual Behavior Disorder, Gambling Disorder, Internet Gaming Disorder, and Eating Disorders. After all the, the body of knowledge in regard to Addictive Disorders and neuroscience has expanded exponentially since the 1930’s, when Dr. Silkworth wrote, “The Doctors Opinion”.

I have had the privilege and honor of meeting Dr. Lembke when she spoke at the IITAP Symposium a few years ago, shortly after Dopamine Nation was published. I was immediately struck by her ability to eloquently articulate the complexities of what occurs in the brain and nervous system, during the phenomenon of Tolerance, Withdrawal, Craving, Hypofrontality, and how the brain can recovery and gain Homeostasis. She is not only brilliant, but incredibly humble, approachable, and authentic. I was very impressed at how she candidly shared about her own addiction and subsequent recovery from romance novels, and how she and her family often take social media and phone cleanses to keep their nervous systems balanced and in homeostasis.

For anyone who would like to read both versions, here you are. Thank you Dr. Lembke for you understanding that po*******hy can and is every bit as addictive as Crack Co***ne and Crystal M**h.

Here is to saner more connected world!

(Abridged Version) PDF | Audio I have been asked by the SPAA community to provide my reflections on the nature of compulsive, addictive use of s*x, po*******hy, ma********on, and s*xual fantasy (henceforward referred to simply as “s*x”). As a physician and a psychiatrist who has spent the last t...

Hello addiction professionals of Western NC. I/We are very excited to be launching the Journeymen Asheville, “Pathways Program”. The Pathways program is a year long program for boys ages 14-17, that offers many programs that Journeymen Asheville has to offer (i.e. ROPAW, Crafting Pasages, SOLO, etc.). Many top minds in the Addictive Disorder’s field (i.e. Gabor Mate, MD, Bruce Alexander, Ph.D., Kevin McCauley, MD, Anna Lembke, MD), believe Addictive Disorders are about “dis-connection”, so the way out is connection. Here is a webinar explaining the Journeymen Asheville Pathways program which helps young men foster health connection. Here Skylar Wilson, ED of Journeymen Asheville, Dr. Misty Boachie, Board member, Kinsman Beal, Lead Mentor, and myself give our insights into this new and exciting program. Please pay it forward and spread the word if you see fit. The journey continues🌄!

Koinostalgi- “For lack of existing vocabulary to describe our present moment of cultural unease, we coined the term koinostalgia. From the Greek words for community (koinonia) and pain (algos), it refers to the discomfort we experience as cultural landscapes change in ways we find unsettling. Whether it’s shifting societal norms, fractured relationships, or escalating rhetoric, these changes can create a deep sense of loss, fear, or disenfranchisement. For some, it manifests as sadness or anger; for others, it may even feel like grief or trauma. In other words, everything is changing, and you don’t know where you fit anymore.” Eric Levine, Ed.D and Kim Nelson, M.A. with Becky Shipkosky

How does uncertainty affect mental health? Political and economic instability fuel anxiety, depression, and cognitive strain. Learn how—and why—it’s reshaping our brains.

I believe this video depicts the core essence of both the Mankind Project (MKP) and Journeymen Asheville. I feel very grateful to have been introduced to the ManKind Project and went through the NWTA in 2008. Being involved in MKP has continuously challenged me to ask difficult questions, such as: What does it mean to be a man? What does it mean to be responsible and accountable in all areas of my life? What is the difference between masculine and feminine energy, and how all humans have both. What is the difference and similarities between intimacy and s*xuality, and lastly, that intimacy starts within and then expands outward. In short MKP has taught me to better show up, open up, wake up, grow up, clean up and evolve up. If your interested in the New Warrior Training Adventure (NWTA) or MKP in general there is an NWTA coming up in April. Here is the link: APRIL 25-27,2025 Collettsville, NC

This is a great podcast by The NY Times, where Dr. Anna Lembke, MD, discusses how we find balance in a culture that breeds addiction. Being an addictions expert, it enrages me and deeply disturbs me when I see so many well meaning addictions treatment centers and addictions therapist, recovery from substances, but but completely missed the Process/Behavioral Addictions (i.e. food, work, p**n, internet, social media, etc., etc.).

She names here what Dr. Patrick Carnes coined back in the early 90’s, he called Addiction Interaction Disorder (AID). I have met Dr. Lembke and she is the real deal and not only extremely bright, but extremely humble. She is very open about her own recovery from romance novels and the internet.

Her “Pletny Paradox” and “Endemic Narcissism” theories, are quite compelling and potential Ph.D. thesis’s. I also appreciate how Dr. Lembke has named the culture in America supports and praises workaholism and adds to the pandemic of loneliness and narcissistic tendencies. Her book, Dopamine Nation, is a MUST read for any addictions expert. As we say in the Mankind Project, “The journey continues!”

The psychiatrist and author of “Dopamine Nation” wants us to find balance in a world of temptation and abundance.
