Both cannabis and ma*****na and used to describe the Cannabis sativa plant. Why do I never use the term “ma*****na”?
This plant we have come to love and respect has been stigmatized and demonized for generations due to its association with the BIPOC community, whether it was Mexican immigrants early in the 20th Century, or African-Americans starting in the 20s.
In the 1930s, American politicians leading the charge of prohibition popularized the term “ma*****na” in the U.S. to paint the drug as a “Mexican vice” and to have an excuse to persecute Mexican immigrants. Yes it’s true “marihuana” was used in Mexico in the 1800s and the term made its way to the United States in the 1890s, but suddenly “ma*****na” became the demon “threatening American’s women”. Look up Harry Anslinger who led the charge back then resulting in garbage like “Reefer Madness” being shown in theaters.
Many experts and lawmakers now argue that we should use the term cannabis instead of ma*****na, as cannabis is a more accurate and neutral term that helps us move away from the negative history that the word ma*****na has had.
