Today is the beginning of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, and this year the state-wide theme is "Building a Safer Kentucky." That's quite a large project and, family, it's going to take every one of us to get it done. That may sound overwhelming, but when we each commit to doing one small thing--big things start happening.

This month, we're asking you to commit to the small stuff--take this time to look for even small ways to support survivors and make it clear that reducing violence is an issue that matters to you. This can be things like:

>Looking up resources available in your community (like your local sexual assault resource center, Porchlight!) and keeping their information somewhere visible and nearby

>Interrupting harmful jokes, myths, or rhetoric when you hear them

>Sharing stories/posts on your social media bringing awareness to the experiences of survivors and/or other violence prevention issues

>Research the issues on your own or with a friend/family member and be proactive in finding the right information and tools to support survivors in your life and community at large

>Wear teal! This week is Wear Teal Week--sport your best teal gear this week and let survivors know they're not alone!

Tomorrow, April 1st, marks the beginning of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. During SAAPM, we take time to collectively hold the pain inflicted by sexual violence; we acknowledge the wounds of injustice, of lives disrupted, of power leveraged in service of silencing the vulnerable. But we also celebrate! We celebrate the awe-inspiring resilience of survivors; we celebrate lives continued; we celebrate the power of collective voices leveraged in service of profound change--we celebrate that together, we can say: it stops here. With us, with our community, today, right now--sexual violence ends here.

Follow along and join us as we celebrate, learn, and grow together this month!

Big step forward in Frankfort: HB 134 (sponsored by Rep. Rebecca Raymer) passed the Senate Health Services Committee unanimously this morning.

The bill would create a statewide Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) coordinator to help ensure hospitals across Kentucky have access to trained nurses who can provide trauma-informed care and conduct forensic exams after sexual assault. It also directs the development of a statewide plan to expand SANE coverage and establishes a public registry of SANEs.

HB 134 already passed the House unanimously and now heads to the full Senate.

Access to trained SANE nurses means survivors receive the care and support they deserve when it matters most. Thank you Senate Health Services Committee members and Rep. Raymer!

HB 521 has officially passed the House unanimously.

This legislation strengthens early intervention in stalking cases, because we know that when stalking behaviors go unaddressed, they too often escalate into sexual or physical violence.

As KASAP Chief Policy Officer Jenna Cassady shared in committee, intervening at the stalking phase helps prevent greater harm down the line.

We’re grateful to the House for the unanimous vote and to bill sponsor Rep. Steven Rudy for his leadership on this important step forward for survivor safety in Kentucky.

The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.

The outcome of this high-profile case is a stark reminder of how power and fame can be barriers to justice. We encourage survivors to take the time they need to process this moment and to know that support is available.

To every survivor watching—we see you, we believe you, and your voice matters.

Pride Month is a time to recognize the LGBTQIA+ community. It’s also a time to keep in mind the importance of supporting mental health within this community, which often faces unique challenges like discrimination, stigma, and barriers to affirming care. Creating inclusive spaces and promoting access to resources can make a real difference.
