In honor of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we are celebrating this resident and his love of travel and entertainment!
He recently went to see the Portland Trail Blazers in December and a WWE (wrestling) Live earlier this month!!
He says he had “a good time” at the Trailblazers game. They ate out and had a beer, and the Sacramento Kings were “so lame, because Portland won.”
He says he’s going to think about even more trips for the future. This guy knows how to have fun!!!
Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month was established to promote inclusion, raise awareness of the barriers people with developmental disabilities face, and celebrate their contributions to communities.
The theme this year is "Nothing About Us Without Us." This theme emphasizes that all decisions, services, and supports must center on self-advocates, their voices, and their lived experiences.

Celebrating Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month with this lovely resident!
She has much to celebrate—starting with doing a really great job navigating her finances, going on solo walks in the neighborhood, expanding her cooking repertoire, and improving her basketball skills in the Special Olympics!
This month she’s focused on budgeting, including being involved in the process of managing her money. Together with staff, she has advocated for herself to get things in order.
“Some of it is for saving to take a trip to see my family in Staton, Oregon,” she says, “which might be a little faster now. That’s what I do; I save it. And if I have plenty of money, I use it.” She says she goes on outings with staff “out in the community most days.”
She has been going on more walks by herself in the neighborhood “to get a breath of fresh air – a breather if I need. I just like them – they’re good exercise I think. Takes my mind off stuff.”
Her cooking skills are growing! She grew up making noodles, salads, sandwiches, and soups. Now, she says, “I like to make anything.” She and staff have been making homemade sushi. “I like homemade sushi better than the outdoor [restaurant] one,” she says. “I just like learning new [dishes]. Staff come up with all kinds of ideas I’ve never heard of.”
She’s been improving her basketball skills by practicing with the Special Olympics. “Yes,” she says, “my skills have improved—I’m surprised because last time I played was in school. I used to go to parks and practice. I’m even learning ways to play that are different from what I knew before.” Their team name—which they got to pick themselves—is the Pink Cobras. “We’re going to do a competition soon, which I’m not ready for. A bunch of people watch – that’s the only part that makes me nervous.”
Go team! And congratulations on all of your achievements!

Celebrating this incredible resident for Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month 💙

Big wins deserve to be shared—and this one is all about courage, growth, and getting back to what matters most. Through hard work managing anxiety and social anxiety, he’s been able to reconnect with something he truly loves: church and community.

“I like going to church and hanging out with my friends. I like praying, God, and friends.”

After a few years away, he returned to church just two months ago—reconnecting with meaningful memories and experiences that bring him joy:

He says he used to go when he was younger, and has ‘a lot of memories there. He remembers a woman baptized him, and someone said, ‘God loves you.’
"God loves me. I feel happy, joyful, thankful.”

When he’s not at church, you can find him doing what he loves—bowling, dancing, participating in Special Olympics, and spending time with friends. Building those connections and staying active are all part of his journey.

Working through anxiety and focusing on personal growth isn’t easy—but he continues to show up and push forward. And that’s something worth celebrating 👏

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is about inclusion, breaking down barriers, and celebrating the contributions of people with developmental disabilities in our communities.

This year’s theme, “Nothing About Us Without Us,” reminds us to center the voices, choices, and lived experiences of self-advocates in everything we do. 💙

These guys had so much fun at the Special Olympics Basketball Regionals Saturday. One got a medal and the other a ribbon. Well earned gentlemen!
They practice at home with a net in the driveway and have skills practice with Special Olympics each week.

What a great event! Thank you

Many of the people we support participate in Special Olympics. Some people go on their own, some need DSPs with them to be able to participate successfully. Special Olympics provides sports training and athletic competitions for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. They encourage physical fitness, and help teach the social skills needed to be on a team. The athletes demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. We are so grateful for this amazing organization, especially our here in Southern Oregon ♥

Celebrating this incredible resident for Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month! 💙

This resident relies on the support of others for mobility, which means placing a great deal of trust in the people around her—sometimes even those she has just met. Despite several new staff members recently, House Manager Ruby shares that “she’s been pretty patient [through it all].” Her resilience and trust are truly inspiring.

One of the things she looks forward to most is visiting her mom, and an upcoming trip has her especially excited. Ruby says the car ride is part of the adventure: “She loves getting out of the house and going for drives, blasting classic rock—her favorite music—really loud in the car.” 🎸

She’s also excited to enjoy some live music at her house soon—because nothing beats the joy of music, movement, and a little bit of rock and roll.

Moments like these remind us how important connection, independence, and joy are for everyone.

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is about celebrating the strengths, experiences, and contributions of people with developmental disabilities while raising awareness about the barriers they still face.

This year’s theme, “Nothing About Us Without Us,” highlights the importance of centering the voices, choices, and lived experiences of self-advocates in every decision that impacts their lives.

Here’s to celebrating inclusion, individuality, and the power of being heard. ✨
