Spotlighting Our Talented Patient, Roni! 🎖️

We are absolutely blown away by the incredible talent in our community! Meet Roni, a proud veteran who served our country for 13 years in the Army National Guard.

Roni used her artistic passion to create a beautiful mural back in 2017 at the local American Legion Post 302, bringing color and inspiration to our local heroes.

This mural represents the 5 branches of the United States Military: the U.S. Army with its’ Abrams M1A2 tank sitting on top of a hillslope, the Marines rising the American Flag on Iwo Jima, the U.S. Air Force F22 Raptor flying through the sky, the U.S. Navy with BB 55 USS Massachusetts and the U.S. Coast Guard with its light house. This project took over 220 hours, using a paint brush the size of a Q-tip!

Roni and her husband, Mark, are one of our favorite "dynamic duos" at the clinic! They support each other, train together, and keep each other motivated.

Captain’s Log: The Great Whiteout of ’26 ❄️⚓

They say a true New Englander’s spirit is forged in the snow, but mostly it’s just forged in a desperate search for the shovel. A local Rehoboth resident sent us their "Captain’s Log" from the past few days, and it’s a masterclass in blizzard survival (and mild cabin fever).

Huge thanks to our local "Captain" for the laughs! Whether you're still digging out or finally seeing pavement, remember: the plow might take your mailbox, but it can’t take your sense of humor.

Captain's log:

No civilization in sight for a day now. I have seen only 1 of the great snow pushing creatures. It was a slow red bumbling beast. We are still well stocked on supplies. The electric machine is quite temperamental, his name is Fred, we have reached agreement of terms he works in short shifts then is allowed to rest a few hours. Getting him back to work is no easy task it is an argument every time but he complains then continues to work again. I feel his time for rest is soon upon us and we will once again go into darkness. If this message is to reach others let it be known we will be ok.

Captain's log:
Its was a most cold and uncomfortable night. Due to the darkness and cold we expected to set in we decided the best chance of survival was to huddle like raccoons in the same tent. That included Levi my most faithful companion. I was told by the merchant I got him from he is a blue heeler. Turns out a blue heeler is a crossbred hound of hell and some sort of dragon. He is most unpredictable but faithful. Throughout the night we could hear the slow low rumbling. Intrigued by the noise Levi and myself ventured from the tent. It was a most beautiful sight, there was a small herd of snow pushers, they travel in line like elephants each one making the path easier for the next. After returning to the tent and believing my wife had woken to refill the oil lamps I had learned Fred has spoken to the queen of his kind and she had graced us with her eternal power. There is still no sign of civilization but the warmth of the sun has returned on this morning and we decided we will soon venture out into the frozen wasteland and see what beauty it may hold.

Captain's log

I believe today may be the final entry of my journey. We made great progress in taming the frozen wasteland. As a family we traveled into the vast unknown. It took many hours of hard and dedicated work but we were finally able to break trails. At last, we came upon a road. Civilization was now in sight. It appears due to the warming temperatures the great snow pushers had found there way home to rest. Slumbering in silence till the cold and snow draws them from there caves again. Now that we are back to more civilized point I find myself dreaming of the silence. The quiet of the snow falling, the warmth of the sun upon my face, the sound of once hidden and frightened birds reappearing with songs as the take flight across the frozen landscape. As harsh as it may seem the frozen lands have a beauty that can only be seen by those who do not fear being lost.

Shoveled the driveway? Don't skip the "Cool Down" ❄️🧘

If you just came inside from clearing the snow, your back and shoulders are likely feeling the strain. Shoveling is a full-body workout, and your muscles need a little love to prevent tomorrow’s soreness.

Take a few minutes to try these gentle movements along with one our PTs, Justine, to mobilize your spine and reset your posture:

1️⃣ Gentle Forward Folds: Stand with soft knees and slowly roll down. Let your head and arms hang heavy to decompress the lower back and stretch out those hamstrings and spine.

2️⃣ Standing Cat/Cow: Place your hands on your thighs. Inhale to arch slightly and open your chest (Cow), then exhale to round your spine and tuck your chin (Cat). This "wakes up" the vertebrae.

3️⃣ Thoracic Rotations: Gently rotate your upper back from side to side. This releases tension in the mid-back and shoulders that builds up from all that lifting and tossing.

4️⃣ Heart-Opening Extension: Gently extend your spine by looking up toward the ceiling and reaching your arms back behind you. This is the perfect "reset" for the hunching and rounding that happens while shoveling!

Your body will thank you tomorrow! Stay warm and stay mobile.

The Blizzard of '26 has been historic! We have seen significant snowfall between 18-30inches across the communities we serve.

Clinics will have a delayed opening today due to ongoing cleanup efforts. The only exception is Rehoboth, which got hit the hardest and will remain closed today with a travel ban still in effect for Southeastern Massachusetts and RI.

More snow is coming! Is your back ready?

With another round of snow in the forecast this week, we want to make sure you’re staying safe while clearing your driveway and sidewalks. Shoveling is a full-body workout, and without the right form, it’s one of the quickest ways to end up in our office with a strained back or shoulder injury.

Before you grab your shovel, keep these PT-approved tips in mind:

Warm Up First: Don’t head straight into the cold! Spend 5–10 minutes doing light movement/ gentle dynamic stretches to prep your muscles.

Push, Don’t Lift: Whenever possible, push the snow rather than lifting it to reduce stress on your spine.

Use Your Legs: If you must lift, bend at your knees and hips—not your waist. Keep your back straight and let your powerful leg muscles do the heavy lifting.

Avoid the "Twist and Toss": Twisting while holding a heavy shovel is a recipe for a back injury. Instead, try to pivot your whole body and walk the snow to where you want to dump it.

Pace Yourself: Take frequent breaks (every 15–20 minutes) and stay hydrated! Wet snow is heavy, and overexertion can happen faster than you think.

Pro Tip: If the snow is sticking to your shovel, try a quick spray of cooking oil or silicone lubricant on the blade to help it slide right off!

Post-Shoveling Recovery Routine:
Once you’re back in the warmth, give your spine and legs some TLC with these three gentle movements:
Single Knee-to-Chest: Lay on your back and hug one knee at a time toward your chest to release lower back tension.
Hamstring Length & Nerve Glides: Extend one leg toward the ceiling for a gentle stretch; add slow ankle circles to improve circulation.
Lower Trunk Rotations: With knees bent and feet flat, slowly rock your knees side-to-side (like windshield wipers) to restore spinal mobility.
