A surprising new study has found that psilocybin—the psychedelic compound found in "magic mushrooms"—might do more than alter consciousness: it could slow down aging.

In experiments conducted by scientists at Emory University and Baylor College of Medicine, human cells treated with psilocin (a compound derived from psilocybin) lived over 50% longer than untreated cells. Lung cells, for example, took 57% longer to reach senescence—the stage where cells stop dividing and age-related damage sets in.

But the findings go beyond petri dishes. When elderly mice (roughly equivalent to 60–65-year-old humans) were given monthly psilocybin doses, 80% were still alive after 10 months, compared to just 50% of the control group. The treated mice also appeared biologically younger, showing healthier fur and fewer white hairs.

Though more research is needed, these results offer the first experimental evidence that psilocybin may promote longevity—possibly extending not just lifespan, but healthspan.

Could a psychedelic compound help us age more gracefully? It's early days, but the science is beginning to say yes.
