Local artist Dan Bowen is donating all artwork sales from the opening night of his art show to Cardiac Rehab at Amberwell Atchison. He and his wife Janean, a member of the Amberwell Atchison Auxiliary, will also generously match all proceeds up to $10,000.

The show opens Friday, January 9, from 4–7pm and runs from January 9th through February 14th at the Cultural Center for the Arts, 111 N. 8th Street in Atchison.

Dan’s connection to Amberwell is personal. After receiving care through Amberwell’s Cardiac Rehab program, he wanted to find a way to give back and support other patients.

A graduate of Rockhurst College, Dan earned his master’s degree and Ph.D. from Kansas State University after being discharged from the Army. He joined the Biology Department in 1976 and retired in 2012 after decades of teaching and working closely with students. In his final year, he served on a committee chaired by his daughter, Professor Julia Bowen.

Dan “accidentally” became an artist while on a cruise across the Indian Ocean from Australia to Madagascar, where he took a watercolor class. He now serves on the board of the Atchison Art Association and chairs its Scholarship Committee.

Dan’s artwork will be on display and available for purchase each Friday from 4–7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. throughout the show. In addition to supporting the Atchison Art Association Scholarship, proceeds from each weekend will benefit a different local organization:

• Jan. 9–10: Cardiac Rehab at Amberwell Atchison
• Jan. 16–17: Atchison Farmers’ Market
• Jan. 23–24: Atchison Area Community Foundation
• Jan. 30–31: United Way
• Feb. 6–7: Atchison Public Library
• Feb. 13–14: Atchison Historic Black Business District

We’re grateful to Dan and Janean for their generosity and for supporting cardiac rehab patients and so many organizations that serve our community.

Earlier this week, a group of Amberwell employees walked the halls singing Christmas carols and spreading holiday cheer.

We shared a few songs and some really good moments with patients, visitors, and coworkers across the building, with a special stop in Inpatient Care that made the time especially meaningful. A surprise visit from Santa made it even more fun!

Thanks to everyone who joined in and helped make Amberwell feel a little brighter.

Amberwell Atchison has been named a 2026 Maternity Care Access
Hospital by U.S. News & World Report. This prestigious designation highlights hospitals that provide essential maternity services in underserved communities, ensuring continued access to critical care for expectant mothers.

Now in its third year, the Maternity Care Access Hospital designation recognizes essential hospitals serving communities that would otherwise be in danger of becoming maternity care deserts if they were to stop providing crucial maternity care services.

U.S. News evaluated approximately 900 hospitals nationwide for the 2026 ratings, and just 147 hospitals – or 16% of all evaluated hospitals – have been designated as Maternity Care Access Hospitals. Hospitals were evaluated based on detailed data submitted to U.S. News via the annual Maternity Services Survey.

“We’re honored to receive this recognition,” said Jane Walsh, Director of Maternal Care at Amberwell Atchison. “It speaks to the compassion and expertise our maternity care staff brings to every birth, and to our commitment to supporting mothers and babies.”

To determine which hospitals qualify, U.S. News reviews information submitted by facilities nationwide. The evaluation includes community access considerations along with quality-related measures, such as cesarean section rates, newborn outcomes, and practices that support safe, patient-centered care.

For more than a century, Amberwell Atchison has supported families across northeast Kansas with maternity care that emphasizes comfort, safety, and personal attention. Amberwell Atchison’s maternal care program offers a dedicated labor and delivery unit designed for patient comfort, support for breastfeeding and early bonding, and experienced maternal care teams focused on meeting each family’s needs.

Over 80 people attended the Remember Me Tree ceremony yesterday in the lobby of Amberwell Atchison, honoring the names of loved ones who have passed. The lobby echoed with music by the Atchison Child Care Association and the Atchison Community Choir, and the Amberwell Atchison Auxiliary volunteers served light refreshments afterwards. Thank you to all who came together to make the evening a memorable event.

Amberwell Atchison is pleased to announce that we’ve earned the 2025 Performance Leadership Award for excellence in Quality. This recognition reinforces our commitment to strong care and positive outcomes for the people we serve.

The Chartis Center for Rural Health presents this award to rural hospitals that demonstrate leading performance in areas such as Quality, Outcomes, and Patient Perspective. The rankings are based on data from the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX®, a widely used tool that assesses key measures of hospital performance.

We’re grateful to be included among this year’s honorees and to join others across the country in recognizing the dedication of rural healthcare teams.
