Local artist Dan Bowen is donating all artwork sales from the opening night of his art show to Cardiac Rehab at Amberwell Atchison. He and his wife Janean, a member of the Amberwell Atchison Auxiliary, will also generously match all proceeds up to $10,000.
The show opens Friday, January 9, from 4–7pm and runs from January 9th through February 14th at the Cultural Center for the Arts, 111 N. 8th Street in Atchison.
Dan’s connection to Amberwell is personal. After receiving care through Amberwell’s Cardiac Rehab program, he wanted to find a way to give back and support other patients.
A graduate of Rockhurst College, Dan earned his master’s degree and Ph.D. from Kansas State University after being discharged from the Army. He joined the Biology Department in 1976 and retired in 2012 after decades of teaching and working closely with students. In his final year, he served on a committee chaired by his daughter, Professor Julia Bowen.
Dan “accidentally” became an artist while on a cruise across the Indian Ocean from Australia to Madagascar, where he took a watercolor class. He now serves on the board of the Atchison Art Association and chairs its Scholarship Committee.
Dan’s artwork will be on display and available for purchase each Friday from 4–7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. throughout the show. In addition to supporting the Atchison Art Association Scholarship, proceeds from each weekend will benefit a different local organization:
• Jan. 9–10: Cardiac Rehab at Amberwell Atchison
• Jan. 16–17: Atchison Farmers’ Market
• Jan. 23–24: Atchison Area Community Foundation
• Jan. 30–31: United Way
• Feb. 6–7: Atchison Public Library
• Feb. 13–14: Atchison Historic Black Business District
We’re grateful to Dan and Janean for their generosity and for supporting cardiac rehab patients and so many organizations that serve our community.
