Let me tell you something important. When they're four you think "they're never going to make it to adulthood" or "I'm never going to make it until their adulthood" but I PROMISE you they are making the connections, one little baby step and one little burp at a time.

One of the biggest ways parents catastrophize (myself included) is mistaking "he/she can't do this now" with "he/she will never be able to do this". So if our 4 year old can't get dressed independently, we assume she'll never be able to dress herself and she will require a team of handmaidens to perform basic self care for the rest of her life. Or if our 8 year old has a meltdown when he doesn't win a soccer game, we predict that he won't be able to play high school rugby or get a date to the homecoming dance and no one will want to sign his yearbook. If a 6th grader repeats a sexist joke he heard on the bus we fear he'll never learn to respect women and he'll never be in a healthy relationship. We KNOW logically these things aren't causations, but the problem is our fear isn't logical. We get into an emotional spiral where we're worried about our child and it feels out of our control. We think that if we can just fix this *one* thing in this one way, we can prevent the scary thing from happening. We want to raise kids who grow up healthy and happy and have good memories and stable relationships and signatures in their yearbooks. Who can argue with that? Our intentions are good, but sometimes we focus so much on the thing they can't do right now in order to improve their future health and happiness, that we miss the opportunity to foster their health and happiness today.

You go to the pediatrician about their health, the dentist about their smile, the coach about their swing, and the teacher about their grades. Who do you go to for support about their behavior?

The Inherent Parent Coach This is where I’m supposed to write something about unlocking the wisdom within and encouraging you to step boldly into your power, but that’s not really me. I prefer straightforward, practical strategies to help you improve relationships with your kids and hopefully he...
