How Physical Therapy Can Provide Relief for Your Low Back Pain

If you suffer with low back pain that lasts longer than a couple of weeks, your doctor or chiropractor will probably refer you to a physical therapist. Pain the continues may indicate a weakness in the core or back. In which case a Physical Therapist can help.
Solution #1: Repeated motion
If the problem stems from irritation or pressure on a nerve from a disk bulge or spinal stenosis, a repeated movement program may help. With these conditions, pain often travels down the leg and there may be numbness, tingling and weakness. Leg pain may be worse than back pain.
Solution #2: Stabilization
The second category of treatment options is stabilization exercises. This can happen when the muscles deep in the abdomen, which help stabilize the spine, become weak or aren’t firing properly.
Solution #3: Manipulation/mobilization
For people with stiffness in the spine, a physical therapist might do mobilization or passive stretch. Stiffness may result from a variety of causes, including osteoarthritis.

With manipulation, the practitioner uses short and rapid thrusting movements over a joint while the body is in a specific position. Mobilization uses similar positions, but the technique is slower and gentler.

Physical therapy (PT) after knee replacement is a vital part of the rehabilitation process that helps to speed up the recovery, restore function, and reduce swelling in the knee. PT usually starts the day after surgery, where a physical therapist will guide you through some exercises and movements. The type and duration of PT you need will depend on several factors, but most people will need to do PT for 3-6 weeks after surgery. Physical therapy and exercise are treatments for relieving, treating, and preventing sciatica symptoms. Typical sciatica signs and symptoms through physical therapy include:

Lower back, hip, and/or leg pain
Numbness, tingling, and/or weakness in the buttock, thigh, leg, and/or foot
Underlying medical conditions, such as a herniated or degenerated disc, or nerve root compression in the lumbar spine may cause radiating symptoms into the leg, commonly known as sciatica.

How does e-stim work?
E-stim uses small electrodes placed on the skin. The electrodes are small, sticky pads that should come off with little discomfort at the end of the session.

Several electrodes are placed around the area receiving treatment. Wires from the e-stim device are attached to the pads.

Steady streams of electrical pulses are delivered through the wires from the e-stim unit. The unit may be small enough to fit in your hand or larger, like a landline phone and answering machine.

For muscular stimulation, the pulses will reach the muscles, signaling them to contract.

Pulses aimed at the nervous system block the transmission of pain signals from reaching the spinal cord and brain. The pulses also stimulate the body to produce more natural pain-relieving chemicals called endorphins.
E-stim may be appropriate for the following conditions:

back pain
cancer-related pain
dysphagia (trouble swallowing)
fibromyalgia
joint pain
arthritis
muscle conditioning (mostly for athletes, such as long-distance runners)
muscle injury from trauma or disease
nerve inflammation
poor muscle strength
urinary incontinence
spinal cord injury
stroke
surgery recovery
