This week, we honor Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler - the first Black woman to earn a medical degree in the United States❤️.

Did You Know?
🖤In 1860, Dr. Crumpler became the first and only African-American woman accepted to the New England Female Medical College.
💚Dr. Crumpler worked with charities and missionary groups to care for formerly enslaved people, treating them regardless of their ability to pay.
❤️She also published "A Book of Medical Discourses," in 1883 which is believed to be the first medical text written by an African-American author.

We honor Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler who paved the way for ALL generations of Black female physicians!

This week, we honor Fannie Lou Hamer - a powerful civil leader who coined the term "Mississippi Appendectomy."💜

Did You Know?
🌟In 1961, Hamer underwent surgery to remove a fibroid and was given a hysterectomy without her knowledge or consent.
🌟She later found that 60% of Black women from her community received unwanted sterilizations.
🌟Continued to fight against the "Mississippi Appendectomy" and other medical practices that came up during the Eugenics Movement.

We honor Fannie Lou Hamer by continuing to advocate for informed consent, ethical care, and dignity for all women!

To kick off BHM, we honor Dr. Helen Octavia Dickens - Ob/gyn and the first African-American female fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Did You Know?
💥 Dr. Dickens led NIH-funded work promoting use of Pap smear screenings amongst other physicians
💥Founded a teen clinic at the University of Philadelphia focused on reducing teen pregnancy and addressing sexual health
💥Created temporary cancer detection clinics throughout Philadelphia by going to areas where patients were like churches

As a trailblazer in teen's health, women's health and cancer prevention, her legacy still lives today!
