What's a common response you give to someone who just lost a loved one?

It's hard to answer the well-meaning "How are you?" after losing a loved one. Saying "I'm fine" is sometimes easier than sharing your feelings, but opening up to those who care about you is necessary to your grief journey. Grief has no timeline, and you are not a burden. The people in your life want to support you.

Josh Rubin passed away on November 22, 2025, after more than 13 years of fighting cancer, with his wife Kathy by his side. He was 69.
