Nobody is a fan of stress or pain, but together they can make everyday tasks feel significantly more difficult or even unmanageable. While pain is often thought of as something purely physical, stress also has very real physical effects on the body, even if they are less obvious at first.

When stress levels stay elevated, the body can become more sensitive to pain, muscles may stay tense longer, and recovery can feel slower. This can create a cycle where stress increases pain and pain increases stress.

Managing stress can benefit your overall well-being and also play an important role in your pain management plan. Explore how they are connected below and see how small changes may lead to meaningful improvements in your daily pain.

Spring is finally here—longer days, sunshine, flowers blooming, (pollen 😬) … all the good things. But if you live with chronic pain, you know that sometimes the “cloud” doesn’t just go away because the weather gets better.

Dr. Ashford believes in treating the whole person—and that includes mental health too. Pain and mental health are often connected, and you don’t have to navigate both alone. If you feel like you’ve run out of options for pain relief, or if anxiety/depression has been weighing on you, we encourage you to check out our sister clinic, Athens KET Center . Their team is amazing and always happy to answer questions and talk through whether ketamine therapy could be a good fit.

Happy Spring! 🌼

Chronic pain can make everyday activities hard, even after an injury heals. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a safe, minimally invasive treatment that targets the small nerves carrying pain signals to your brain. By gently using heat to interrupt these signals, RFA can reduce pain and help you feel more comfortable. Many patients find it easier to move, sleep, and enjoy daily life after treatment.

At Ashford Pain Solutions, we understand that pain is more than just where it hurts. It’s how the brain and nervous system process and interpret signals from the body. When the nervous system stays on high alert, pain can persist even after healing. That’s why our approach focuses on treating the whole person, not just the symptoms, helping calm the nervous system and support long-term relief.

Back and neck pain often start with small, repeated strains throughout the workday. Simple ergonomic adjustments like proper chair support, screen height, and regular movement breaks can significantly reduce stress on your spine. A well-set workspace combined with consistent posture awareness helps prevent discomfort before it becomes chronic pain.

Our Story

Dr. James Ashford is a board-certified anesthesiologist and interventional pain management specialist who leads the team at Ashford Pain Solutions in Athens, Georgia. His goal is to help his patients feel like themselves again by using medically sound treatment practices and a patient-focused approach to therapy that relieves discomfort and addresses the underlying cause of their pain. During medical school, Dr. Ashford became interested in the physiology and biochemistry of anesthesia, as well as the many different interventional procedures involved in pain management. This interest, coupled with a strong desire to help people dealing with chronic or new-onset painful conditions, led him to specialize in pain management. Dr. Ashford attended the University of Georgia in Athens for his undergraduate studies and graduated magna cm laude with a degree in biology. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University and completed residency training in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. Dr. Ashford then underwent fellowship training in pain management at the University of Florida in Gainesville, before returning to Athens to establish his practice. He grew up in Athens, remains committed to this North Georgia community, and makes his Christian faith and family a priority in his daily life. Dr. Ashford is an accomplished pianist and enjoys traveling and playing golf, basketball, and tennis during his free time.
