Athens Council of the Blind

Athens Council of the Blind The Athens Council of the Blind is an advocacy group of blind/visually impaired people for the support & promotion of blind/visually impaired people.

The Athens Council of the Blind is a non-profit consumer organization affiliated with the Georgia Council of the Blind, which in turn is affiliated with the American Council of the Blind. We strive to elevate the social, economic, and cultural levels of the blind and visually impaired. We strive to educate the public about the problems of blindness and the needs and capabilities of the blind and visually impaired. GCB activities and programs include: educational programs, legislative actions, scholarships, peer support, technology, exhibits, newsletters, social activities and Braille. Due to our efforts, Georgia was the first state to have accessible voting for the blind and visually impaired through the use of speech output voting machines. We the Athens Council of the Blind pledge to defend and support the objectives of GCB and do all in our power to further the well being of all blind and visually impaired persons within the state, nation and throughout the world.

Chris Holbrook and Jerrie Toney (audio equipment)
And all our amazing GCB members who donated even just a little out of pocket!

ACB Director of Advocacy and Governmental Affairs, Claire Stanley, joined Sarah Malaier, Senior Advisor for Public Policy and Research at the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB), to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Communication Service for the Deaf, Inc. (CSD).

Claire and Sarah were invited to the gala as part of our collaboration with organizations across the disability community, including CSD, to advance the Communications, Video, and Technology Accessibility Act (CVTA) — legislation that would modernize accessibility requirements for captioning, audio description, and video interfaces.

Pictured (left to right): Claire with her guide dog, Tulane, alongside Sarah on the red carpet. Behind them, a gold “50” balloon and a CSD backdrop set the celebratory scene.

It’s Election Day, and your voice matters! Accessible voting is essential for full participation in our democracy. ACB is committed to ensuring that people who are blind or have low vision can cast their ballots privately and independently.

Visit ACB.org/voting to learn about your rights, accessible voting options, and other resources.

We also encourage you to check out Election Protection, a national, nonpartisan coalition ensuring that all voters have an equal opportunity to vote and have that vote count: https://866ourvote.org/. If you have questions about voting, or face barriers when voting, or call or text 866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683) to speak with a trained Election Protection volunteer.
