There has recently been an incident at the cemetery where a family member marked a grave without contacting a board member. In this particular incident, the grave was luckily located in the plot owned by the family. This can not be allowed to happen going forward. The cemetery board has always cooperated with families in locating the graves for their loved ones. We will continue to do so. It is imperative that a representative of the cemetery be involved in the marking of grave sites. We have maps showing exactly who owns what plot. It is some times confusing as to where plots are located. Someone who does not have all the available information could easily mark a spot in someone else’s plot or even disturb an existing grave. It is absolutely the family’s right to locate their loved one in a spot of their choosing as long as it is located within the boundaries of their family plot but the cemetery representatives must be involved in this process. We are diligent in our efforts to ensure that the cemetery is well maintained and operated in a professional manner. Please cooperate with us and notify one of the board members if you need to select a spot to bury someone. The sign at the driveway entrance to the cemetery includes current board members names and contact information. I am going to list my information as well as Judy and Tommy’s. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

The cemetery relies on the generous donations from the families and loved ones of the people buried there. We know times are hard. Costs for upkeep of the cemetery continue to rise just as costs in your everyday lives continue to rise. Those of you that have donated this year, thank you very much. If you have not donated to the cemetery, anything that you are able to contribute would be greatly appreciated. The Cemetery is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. All donations are tax deductible and should be addressed to the Hurricane Cemetery at the address below.

The Hurricane Cemetery had its beginning in 1850. Shortly after Mr. Bill Kilpatrick moved into this community, he passed away. Mr. Washburn owned the land which the community agreed upon as a proper cemetery site and Mrs. Kilpatrick paid him one dollar for a burial plot. Trees had to be cut down before a grave could be dug. Today this grave is in a group of six marked only by rocks for head and foot stones. ~From the 1962 book of the Claiborne Parish Historical Association.
