Emory G. Patterson, M.D.
Physician

Dr. Patterson is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a native of Georgia, raised in Valdosta, and first came to Athens to attend the University of Georgia. Four years later he graduated magna cm laude with a degree in microbiology from the Honors Program at UGA. He earned his Doctorate of Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA. After medical school, Dr. Patterson remained at the Medical College of Georgia where he completed his internship in Internal Medicine and his residency in Ophthalmology. Dr. Patterson has been trained in the latest techniques in cataract and glaucoma surgery, as well as surgery of the eyelids and treatment of diabetes and macular degeneration. During college he met his wife Lauren. Now they have three small children and love calling Athens their home. Outside of his clinic and operating time, Dr. Patterson works with Medical Campus Outreach and is involved at Redeemer Presbyterian Church. He is a volunteer physician at Mercy Health Center in Athens, GA. Dr. Patterson considers it a true privilege to work in eye care and especially enjoys the long-term patient-physician relationships ophthalmology affords.

Walter A. Sams IV, M.D.

Dr. Sams, an Athens native, joined the practice in August, 2008. He graduated as Valedictorian of Presbyterian College with a B.S. in Biology. After receiving his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia where he graduated with highest honors in Alpha Omega Alpha, he completed an internship at Baptist Hospital System in Birmingham, Alabama. He completed a residency in ophthalmology from the University of Virginia at Charlottesville where he was chief resident during his final year. Dr. Sams became a partner of the practice in December, 2009, and he is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a comprehensive ophthalmologist who treats and performs surgery on diseases affecting the eye. He specializes in anterior segment surgery, including cataract surgery using the newest technology of implantable intraocular lenses. He is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology.

Anthony L. DeMarco, M.D.

Dr. DeMarco earned his engineering and medical degrees from the University of Iowa . He served an ophthalmology residency at Georgetown University in Washington . DC. Prior to coming to Athens , Dr. DeMarco gained a fellowship in cataract surgery and eyelid plastic surgery. He is trained in refractive surgery techniques and Lasik. Dr. DeMarco is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Brent M. Crymes, M.D.

Dr. Crymes is a graduate of the University of Georgia . He attended Georgia on a tennis scholarship and was captain of the 1981 tennis team. He earned his medical degree from the Medical college of Georgia in 1986. Dr. Crymes’ training includes an internship at Georgia Baptist Hospital and an ophthalmology residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and entered private practice in 1990.

Alex P Keller III, M.D.

Dr. Keller attended Athens High School and is a graduate of the University of Georgia. He attended Georgia on a tennis scholarship and was captain of the 1966 tennis team. Dr. Keller earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Medical School. His training includes an internship at the Macon Hospital. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1971 until 1975. Upon leaving the service, Dr. Keller served an ophthalmology residency at the University of Mississippi. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the past president of the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology. He entered private practice in 1978.
