For those with blood cancers and disorders like leukemia, having a donor match for stem cell or blood and marrow transplants (BMT) can be life changing. However, primarily due to misconceptions about the donor process, equity in donor match availability varies greatly across ethnicities in the U.S.

Some misconceptions about BMT and stem cell donations:
🚫 These are NOT organ donations.
🚫 Standard transplants DO NOT use embryonic stem cells — they use stem cells from bone marrow or peripheral blood.
🚫 Not all transplants require surgery. 90% of donations use apheresis, an outpatient process similar to donating plasma or platelets.

More diversity in the registry helps everyone. Even if you register and are never called, you’re still making a difference by simply being in the system for the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP).

At just 26 years-old, Ellie Rinehart never imagined she would be diagnosed with cancer. Her annual exam led to a life-altering diagnosis and a quick plan of action. We share Ellie’s story in honor of tonight’s Columbus Blue Jackets Hockey Fights Cancer Night. 🖤

Her journey began when she noticed a small freckle on her forehead that seemed to be slowly growing. During her annual, full-body skin check, she mentioned it to her dermatologist. While it didn’t look like typical skin cancer, the freckle was removed out of caution and two weeks later, Ellie received the news: it was melanoma.

“Hearing the word ‘melanoma’ at my age was life-altering,” Ellie recalls. “Thankfully, we caught it very early.”

She underwent an eight-hour Mohs surgery to remove the cancerous cells. The recovery was challenging but knowing how lucky she was to catch it early made the moments of discomfort worth it.

Ellie’s story is a powerful reminder that early detection saves lives — it made all the difference in her treatment and outcome, and it could do the same for you.

Michael Stewart, a Guest Services Supervisor at Nationwide Arena, never expected a trip to the ER after a hernia surgery would change his life. Tests revealed a tumor in his colon and the start of his cancer journey.

This is his story in honor of Thursday's Columbus Blue Jackets Hockey Fights Cancer Night presented by OhioHealth. 💙

“When I got the news, I just went numb,” Michael recalls. “You have no idea what you’re up against. That’s where the OhioHealth team begins the healing process.”

From his stay at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital to his treatments at the OhioHealth Bing Cancer Center, Michael says his care teams made all the difference — explaining every step, listening to his concerns and guiding him through the toughest days.

“I had one rule: no crying, no ‘I’m sorrys.’ We’re going to fight this together,” he says.

Through his treatment, Michael leaned on the support from family, friends and coworkers, reminding others that small gestures like a text, call or note can mean everything. “Little things matter. Check on your teammates.”

Michael continues his fight with strength and gratitude, encouraging others to stay proactive about their health. “Go get your scans. It can save your life.”

After years of smoking, Kim Swart’s doctor urged her to break the habit and schedule yearly CT scans. Walking away from ci******es wasn’t easy, but when her longtime doctor moved away, she finally made the change — a gift to her doctor, and to herself.

A year after quitting, a routine CT scan revealed a spot that needed a closer look. A biopsy then confirmed cancer. “I was scared but determined to fight,” Kim recalls. Fortunately, it was detected early and four radiation treatments were all she needed.

Today, Kim is cancer-free and reminds everyone: early detection matters. “Get your yearly exams. It could save your life. It did mine.”

Kim is one of four OhioHealth cancer survivors being recognized during a special moment at the Columbus Blue Jackets game this Thursday for Hockey Fights Cancer Night.🤍

Four OhioHealth cancer survivors are being recognized during a special moment this Thursday at the Columbus Blue Jackets game for Hockey Fights Cancer Night. We’re honored to share each of their personal cancer journeys. This is Kristin Meyer’s story:

In 2023, a routine mammogram at OhioHealth Pickerington Methodist Hospital led to an ultrasound and a radiologist’s immediate concern. Soon after, Kristin was diagnosed with Stage 2 HER2+ invasive ductal carcinoma, a very aggressive breast cancer.

Kristin’s treatment was intense, including chemotherapy, surgery, radiation and immunotherapy. Between treatments, missing milestones with her sons and continuing to work full-time as a higher education teacher for nurses, the journey was challenging both physically and emotionally.

Her community became her anchor. Her husband helped manage appointments and daily life, friends hosted a head-shaving party and even crafted a baseball cap from her real hair. Her radiation oncology team — whom she affectionately calls “The Girls” — became her biggest cheerleaders.

Throughout it all, Kristin held onto one guiding mantra: “The only way out is through.”

Today, Kristin is cancer-free and has returned to patient care as a bedside nurse at OhioHealth Bing Cancer Center.

Walking the same halls where she once was a patient, she feels her life has come full circle – and she’s now helping others navigate their own cancer journeys.

OhioHealth Marion General Hospital officially celebrated the completion of its renovated emergency department on Wednesday!

Following a year of construction, the $5.8 million investment has transformed the space to better support patient experience through efficiency, safety and comfort.

Upgrades include a fast-track area to expedite care for those with less severe symptoms, a dedicated behavioral health space and enhanced ultrasound rooms.

"We’ve seen improvement in the amount of time it takes for our patients to go from the door to doctor in the emergency department. This new space helps our team of providers work as efficiently as possible,” said Matthew White, MD, medical director of emergency services at Marion General Hospital.
