How long are drugs in one’s system?

Drugs have certain “detection windows”—the amount of time after ingestion during which evidence of their use can be detected by a drug test. For instance, alcohol is absorbed and eliminated more quickly than other drugs. This is why post-accident testing procedures often require testing for alcohol to occur within two hours. Other drugs are eliminated from the system at different rates and thus detectable for different periods of time, often long after the drug's effect has worn off. The following are estimates of the length of time that certain drugs are detectable:

Alcohol – 1 oz. for 1.5 hours
Amphetamines – 48 hours
Barbiturates – 2-10 days
Benzodiazepines – 2-3 weeks
Co***ne – 2-10 days
He**in Metabolite – less than 1 day
Morphine – 2-3 days
L*D – 8 hours
Ma*****na – casual use, 3-4 days; chronic use, several weeks
Methamphetamine – 2-3 days
Methadone – 2-3 days
Phencyclidine (P*P) – 1 week

North Alabama Drug Testing, LLC, can conduct hair collections for a very accurate and extended use result. We collect 1 1/2 inches of hair starting at the scalp. Hair generally grows 1/2 inch a month. The sample collected usually indicates drug use the previous 3 months.

Faye Tribble and Deborah Johnston are retired educators with a combined 71 years of professional experience who launched North Alabama Drug Testing in 2016. They began as a mobile on-site testing company but has expanded to individual testing in an office setting at 121 Cloverleaf Dr, Suite H, Athens, Al. Our collection services include DOT and Non-Dot Federal collections, laboratory analysis, instant read results, hair follicle testing, saliva, EtG alcohol and BAT alcohol collections, and DNA (paternity or familial relations).
