COMCorps members create and support social and physical environments that promote good health and wellness for all. Members aim for a county where children are healthy as they age into adulthood and a community that visualizes a healthy future. Primary focuses of the program include food insecurity, nutrition education, and emotional support for individuals living with chronic stress. Our members serve 1700 hours in 11.5 or 10.5 terms for an average 34-40 hours per week, starting every August. COMCorps partners with host-site organizations, which includes schools, nonprofits, healthcare systems and county-level government agencies. Through service, members and organizations will address social determinants of health with a trauma-informed approach directing members in creative, community-generated solutions to pressing local needs. AmeriCorps is a national service program that improves lives and fosters civic engagement. Members commit their time to address critical community needs. More than 80,000 Americans across the country participate each year to make our people safer, stronger, and healthier. Members strengthen our communities and Get Things Done for America. Exciting news from COMCorps host site NAMI Athens! NAMI Athens was awarded $1.125 million from the Medicaid Community Reinvestment Program to open a community mental health hub! “Creating this hub gives our community a place to turn—a place where people can walk in, feel supported, and know they’re not alone. This investment allows us to build something our region has needed for a very long time,” said Jordan Pepper, Executive Director of NAMI Athens.
A new community resource center run by NAMI Athens will soon expand access to mental health support in the Athens County area.

COMCorps members Nick and Andrea are our LeaderCorps representatives for this program year! They just wrapped up two days of training in Columbus with LeaderCorps representatives from AmeriCorps programs across Ohio. We can't wait to see all that they accomplish this year!
🌟 Over the past two days, ServeOhio proudly brought together our incredible LeaderCorps members for a powerful kickoff to their leadership journey!
Selected by their AmeriCorps programs, these emerging leaders participated in a dynamic leadership development experience facilitated by ServeOhio staff. From the art of storytelling to designing impactful service projects, they gained tools to amplify their service this year. 🛠️✨
They also connected with one another, shared their passions, and reflected on the power of service through our Service Speaks exercise. 💬❤️
We’re so excited to support these changemakers throughout their service year—and we can’t wait to see the incredible impact they’ll make in communities across Ohio!

COMCorps has the goal to increase the quality of life in Athens County through AmeriCorps members creating and supporting social and physical environments that promote good health and wellness for all.
COMCorps partners with host-site organizations which include schools, nonprofits, healthcare systems and county-level government agencies.
Through service, members and organizations address the social determinants of health with a trauma-informed approach directing members in creative, community-generated solutions to pressing local needs.
COMCorps members facilitate a yearlong nutrition education program, Live Healthy Kids, to 400 students each week, increasing knowledge of and taste preferences for healthy foods.
Members create and support social and physical environments that promote good health through activities that address the social determinants of health by providing life-enhancing resources: healthy food supply, gardening, social connectivity, transportation, and knowledge of healthy habits. Members promote a sense of community (social networks, social support, social participation, and/or community leadership) and increase access to programs that address poverty, childhood development, food insecurity, social exclusion, addiction, food, transportation, and health services. In every interaction, members embody and model safe, secure, stable relationships for children and adults.
COMCorps is where members turn passion into purpose. COMCorps strives for every member to have a transformative experience while serving. Anticipated member outcomes include a wider perspective on societal issues, an understanding of individuals who have had a life different than their own, a better understanding of self and unique skills brought to a variety of roles, greater confidence, an understanding of trauma-informed approaches to community care, and community collaboration.
