This year, we celebrate the 51st annual Medical Laboratory Professional Week!
Laboratory workers are some of the most unknown workers in a medical setting. Many people in the public (and academia) do not understand or are even aware of the medical personnel who perform the complex medical laboratory testing
Every day, lab professionals strengthen patient care through expertise, precision, and dedication. Although the work happens behind the scenes, the result of our work supports confident decisions and better outcomes in healthcare.
Our expertise to obtain specimens and provide results is what the provider, nurse, pharmacist and others put their confidence in to make decisions. We provide upwards of 70% of all the medical information in a patient’s medical record. Providers rely on these records to make an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
A laboratory worker's dedication to accuracy and consistency is admirable. They work late nights and long shifts – yes, even on holidays – to help patients get the appropriate treatment for their conditions.
We handle substances from every part of the body. We are exceedingly logical and we work in a world of data-driven analysis and facts. Our work saves lives and our ability to think and act quickly could be the difference between life and death. Phlebotomists and laboratory techs are vital, and our job is challenging.

Virginia Gay Hospital: A Healing Tradition

Virginia Gay Hospital was established in Vinton in 1923 with a gift from a former resident and Ohio philanthropist Virginia Walcutt Gay. Since its founding, the hospital has been an independent, non-profit hospital sustained by a generous community grateful to have excellent professional care available locally. Today, there are four clinics in Benton County in addition to the 25-bed critical access hospital with multiple opportunities to use and expand on skills and education, create strong relationships and make an impact on a community.
