Medicare enrollment periods are important times when people can sign up for Medicare or make changes to their plans:
Initial Enrollment Period: when new members first join Medicare
Annual Enrollment Period: (Oct 15 to Dec 7), allows everyone to change their plans if needed
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period: when those already in a Medicare Advantage plan switch or drop their coverage
Special Enrollment Period: for people with specific life changes who can enroll outside the regular times
General Enrollment Period: for anyone who missed their initial sign-up opportunity
Each period helps ensure that people can find the right healthcare options for them.

If you have Part D, there’s a good chance that there are significant changes for 2025, because changes to the law that sets up the rules for the Part D benefit made coverage more generous. Medicare is taking steps to stabilize Part D premiums during this transition by limiting the increase in the base premium. In 2025, the national average premium for the Part D basic benefit is around $37 per month.
