✨ What Are Keloids — And Why Do They Form? ✨
Keloids are raised, firm, often red or deep purple scars that grow beyond the original injury site. Unlike typical scars, they can continue developing for months — even years — and may cause discomfort, itching, or cosmetic concerns, especially on visible areas like the cheeks, ears, shoulders, and chest.

Keloids often form after:
• Scrapes & cuts
• Burns
• Acne
• Body piercings or tattoos
• Surgery
• Chickenpox
• Vaccinations

While anyone can develop keloids, they are more common in African American, Asian, and Hispanic patients, and tend to occur between ages 10–30. Genetics and skin type play a major role.

If you're prone to keloids, early care is key. Our Atlanta dermatology team can help with prevention, treatment options, and personalized guidance to reduce discomfort and improve appearance.

💙 You don’t have to live with keloids — effective treatments are available.

Acne Keloidalis: What You Need to Know

Acne Keloidalis is a chronic condition most commonly seen in Black patients, causing painful ingrown hair bumps on the back of the neck and scalp. These bumps often develop after close haircuts and can become itchy, infected, or lead to keloid scarring and permanent hair loss if untreated.

Early treatment with topical steroids or antibiotics can help, while chronic cases may require injections, oral medications, or even surgery.

Pro Tip: Black men can ask their barber to apply astringent before getting a lineup—not just after. Just like surgeons prep the skin before a procedure, applying astringent beforehand can reduce irritation and help prevent bumps.

For expert diagnosis and treatment, Buckhead Dermatology is here to help.

✨ Struggling with Ingrown Hairs (Razor Bumps)? We Can Help! ✨

Ingrown hairs—also known as razor bumps—are especially common among Black patients due to naturally curly hair that curls back into the skin.

➡️ Who gets them most?
• Black men often experience them in the beard area
• Black women commonly see them in the bikini area, underarms, and neck

Shaving, plucking, tweezing, or waxing can actually make razor bumps worse. In some cases, bumps may become infected and require topical or oral antibiotics.

At Buckhead Dermatology, we offer:
✔️ Creams to soften hairs, smooth bumps, and fade dark spots
✔️ Expert evaluation to treat infection when needed
✔️ Advanced laser treatment in our Atlanta dermatology office — the most effective long-term solution

You don’t have to struggle with irritation, bumps, or dark spots. Our board-certified dermatologist provides expert care tailored for Black skin.

🌟 Understanding Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra (DPN) & How We Treat It 🌟

Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra (DPN) is a benign skin condition commonly seen in Black patients. It appears as small brown or black growths on the face—often around the eyes or on the cheeks. These growths can be flat or slightly raised and may increase in size or number over time, especially during pregnancy.

While not cancerous, DPNs can sometimes be unattractive or itchy, prompting many patients to seek treatment

At Buckhead Dermatology, Dr. Straughn offers safe and effective removal of DPN—no needles or numbing medication required! Our Atlanta office provides a quick, in-office procedure to restore smooth, clear skin.

✨ Feel confident in your skin again—DPN removal is easier than you think!

Victory Over Adult Acne
By Buckhead Dermatology | November 22, 2025
adult acne treatments near me
Acne is most often associated with the woes of adolescence. In the teenage years, the body seems to spiral through stages, and hormones shift faster than a roller coaster. Although some teens never experience acne, some suffer for years from the skin condition, and others may have it for a short time. However, once into adulthood, acne carries a stigma and can lead to depression and anxiety for those suffering from visible and pustule-filled acne, especially on the face, back, and arms. Sadly, many adults don’t realize the many solutions to treat adult acne, their effectiveness, and how affordable treatments can be. If you have adult acne and want the opinion of a licensed dermatologist, contact Buckhead Dermatology today to schedule an appointment.

Untreated adult acne is a concern for many in their careers and at the height of social activity. Low self-esteem caused by acne symptoms can affect a person’s quality of life. Knowing why acne occurs, how to treat it, and which environmental factors can worsen or improve it helps individuals make the best decisions for their lifestyle. Adult acne is not caused by poor hygiene, as most people think. Instead, multiple factors can influence whether a person experiences it.

Hyper Hormones Hijack Adult Skin
Hormone fluctuations don’t stop in adulthood. Especially women who go through pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause are experiencing significant volatility in hormones, which often result in signs of acne. During these times, symptoms do pass, and some dermatologists won’t recommend specific treatments during pregnancy to ensure the baby’s safety and prevent anything harmful from being absorbed through the woman’s skin.

Stressing the Skin Over Stress
It is well known that stress is common among many adults. Whether at home, work, or a combination, adults deal with stress in different ways. When stress is not managed, one of the ways it can reveal itself is through adult acne. The skin is a direct indicator of overall health, both mental and physical. Stress can make skin cells more active, leading to increased oil production and acne. Learning ways to manage stress is not only beneficial for a person’s mental health, but it can also have a direct impact on the skin’s appearance.

Living and Lifestyle Choices
What we put in our bodies and on our bodies will influence our skin health, including acne. In adulthood, we should consider what foods are known to cause skin conditions, including acne. According to WebMD’s list of acne-causing foods, some well-known triggers of adult acne include milk, high-sugar and carb intake, chocolate (dairy and sugar combined), high fiber, nuts, and anything fried! It is safe to say that if you need a napkin when you pick up something to eat, it is because of the oil content; your skin is likely going to have an overdose of oils, which can trigger a breakout of adult acne. Keeping hands clean and avoiding touching the face are other ways to prevent impurities from reaching the face. Never pick or pop adult acne, as this can spread bacteria and leave lasting scars.

Smoking and lack of sleep may not cause acne in adults, but they can worsen the symptoms. Consistent treatment can eliminate adult acne successfully and give people the break they so desperately seek when facing severe adult acne.

Nothing but the Stats
Adult acne occurs in more than 50% of women in their twenties, dropping to 35% in their thirties. Persistent acne affects around 20% of men in their thirties, and cases of adult acne have grown steadily over the last 10 years. Adult acne affects both men and women, regardless of skin color. Genetics is also a consideration, but acne is highly treatable. Topical cleansers, serums, creams, and oral prescriptions can provide the relief you seek and give you the skin you deserve. Although acne may be cute on babies and understandable in teens, adults who suffer from adult acne can feel unmotivated to put themselves out there and may even withdraw socially.

Don’t Let Adult Acne Hold You Back
If acne is holding you back socially, professionally, or negatively affecting your self-esteem, contact a local dermatologist who specializes in helping clients overcome adult acne once and for all. Dr. Sherrie Straughn has been featured as one of America’s Top Dermatologists and brings more than 25 years of experience to the table. She is an outstanding representation of professionalism, knowledge, and genuine care for her patients. If you live or work in Atlanta and suffer from adult acne, you can count on Dr. Straughn’s expertise to help you find an acne solution that works at an affordable cost.
