Dr. Mark Mayo, one of our affiliate doctors at Eye Center of Texas , once again took part in the Chevron Houston Marathon weekend by serving as a guide for a visually impaired runner. A longtime participant in the Houston Marathon since 2018, Dr. Mayo completed the half marathon this year, running 13.1 miles while guiding Justin Chang.
Justin traveled from Virginia to compete and recently completed the New York Marathon. Dr. Mayo trained with EyeCan Alliance, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting blind and visually impaired athletes in endurance events. His training included guided runs at Memorial Park and simulations using blindfolds or blackout glasses to better understand the experience of running tethered to a guide.
We’re proud of Dr. Mayo and Justin for an inspiring race and their continued commitment to making endurance sports more accessible. 🏃🏻
