This week, we are recognizing Rheumatoid Arthritis awareness by sharing reliable resources and education—because understanding RA is a key part of managing it.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks healthy joint tissue, leading to inflammation, pain, stiffness, and fatigue. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential for protecting joints and supporting long-term quality of life.

For more information about symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options, we recommend this trusted resource from the Arthritis Foundation:

We remain committed to patient education, early intervention, and compassionate care—not just this week, but every day.

The thyroid may be small, but it plays a big role in your overall health—especially for those living with autoimmune conditions.

In rheumatology, we often see autoimmune thyroid disorders, such as Hashimoto’s disease and Graves’ disease, occur alongside other autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. Thyroid dysfunction can contribute to symptoms like fatigue, joint or muscle pain, brain fog, weight changes, temperature sensitivity, and mood shifts.

Because autoimmune conditions often overlap, thyroid health is an important part of the bigger picture. If you are experiencing new or worsening symptoms, thyroid testing may be worth discussing with your care team.

As Thyroid Awareness Month comes to a close, it’s a great time to learn more about thyroid health and autoimmune thyroid conditions from the American Thyroid Association:

With a winter storm expected to impact our region, we want to share a few gentle reminders to help our rheumatology patients stay safe and supported. Cold temperatures, added stress, and potential power outages can be especially challenging for those managing autoimmune and inflammatory conditions—but a little preparation can go a long way.

𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙮 𝙒𝙖𝙧𝙢 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚
Layer clothing throughout the day, including warm socks and gloves—even indoors if needed. Keep extra blankets nearby and consider hand or foot warmers if you are prone to circulation issues such as Raynaud’s. Closing curtains and sealing drafts can also help retain warmth inside your home.

𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙣 𝘼𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙋𝙤𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙋𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙊𝙪𝙩𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙨
Charge phones, backup batteries, and any medical devices in advance. Keep flashlights and fresh batteries accessible, and avoid relying on candles if possible. Prepare a small essentials kit with medications, lip balm, eye drops, water, and nonperishable snacks. If you take medications that require refrigeration, have a plan in place using a cooler and ice packs.

𝙎𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙎𝙮𝙢𝙥𝙩𝙤𝙢𝙨
Dry indoor air and cold outdoor temperatures can worsen joint stiffness, fatigue, and dryness. Keep symptom-relief items such as eye drops or oral moisture products within reach, stay hydrated, and try gentle stretching or movement if you are indoors for extended periods.

Most importantly, listen to your body. Rest when you need to, conserve energy, and do not hesitate to ask for help if weather conditions make things difficult.

We are thinking of you and wishing everyone a safe, warm, and healthy few days ahead. 💙

Cold fronts can bring more than a change in temperature. For some people living with arthritis and autoimmune rheumatic conditions, shifts in barometric pressure and colder weather may temporarily increase joint stiffness, aching, or headaches. While weather does not cause arthritis, it can influence how symptoms are felt.

If you notice that weather-related flares are becoming more frequent or harder to manage, it may be a good time to check in with your rheumatology care team. Ongoing disease management remains the most important factor in maintaining joint health through every season.

Temperatures are dropping, which means many of us are reaching for cozy socks at home. While they are comfortable, traditional socks do not provide traction and can increase the risk of falls on smooth surfaces. Slippers or grip socks are a safer option during the winter months.

One unexpected slip can quickly turn a cozy day into unwanted downtime. Trust us, a little extra traction goes a long way!
