✨ “Being in spaces like this gives me hope.”

During the plenary “Advancing Black Maternal Health and Justice within the Fight for Reproductive Autonomy” at the 2024 Black Maternal Health Conference & Training Institute™ ( ), Dr. Nia Mitchell, reflected on the importance of being in rooms where Black researchers, evaluators, practitioners, and advocates come together to lead conversations about OUR OWN health and futures. In a field where representation in research and evaluation is still limited, Dr. Mitchell reminded us why spaces like matter.

We have some really exciting updates about coming soon and we can’t wait to share them with you! Make sure you are subscribed to our newsletter at blackmamasmatter.org/connect so you don’t miss a thing!

At the Black Maternal Health Conference and Training Institute™ ( ), some of the most powerful movement-building happened away from the main stage, right inside our breakout rooms.

These weren’t just sessions, they were spaces of intimacy, vulnerability, and deep engagement. Notes were taken, hard questions were asked, lived experience were shared, and space was held for one another in ways that pushed the work forward.

From floor-seated reflections to full rooms of focused listening, this is what collective learning looks like in action.

✨ BMHC26 is on the horizon, and we’re building toward it already. Learn more about and what it’s all about at blackmaternalhealthconference.com!

During our plenary panel, Advancing Black Maternal Health and Justice within the Fight for Reproductive Autonomy, panelist Pilar Herrero of Center for Reproductive Rights shared reflections that couldn’t have been anything but the truth.

She named how laws have long been used to suppress midwifery care, especially among Black and Indigenous midwives, and how this pattern mirrors the ongoing assault on abortion access. Her insights echoed what so many of us know deeply...that reproductive autonomy, birth justice, and Black Maternal Health are inseparable.

This conversation was a necessary call to action and a reminder of the work ahead.

Black-led, community-rooted care saves lives. When Black birthing people are supported by providers who look like them and understand their lived experiences, outcomes improve—and so does trust in the healthcare system.

That’s why investing in a culturally aligned perinatal workforce is not optional—it’s essential.

From pushing for better midwifery legislation like Georgia’s HB 520 to building networks of Black birthworkers across the country and the Diaspora, our Alliance Partners are making change real.

This week, we celebrate the invaluable contributions of midwives to maternal and child health. Midwifery care has been a cornerstone of communities for centuries, and it continues to be essential today.

As Jamarah Amani from Southern Birth Justice Network eloquently stated at BMHC24, "We don't need to look outside of our communities for solutions; we need folks to get out of our way." She's absolutely right! Black midwives are a powerful force for positive change in maternal healthcare.

Our policy agenda and Issue Brief: Expanding Midwifery Licensure in Georgia highlight recommendations for expanding midwifery licensure and access. By implementing these policies, we can ensure that all pregnant people have the opportunity to receive the high-quality, culturally relevant care they deserve.
