There has been a lot of noise on the internet lately about doctors taking a break from medicine. Some feel it’s an atrocity to leave the field and a complete abandonment of patients. Did I work tooth and nail to get where I am and do I LOVE what I do? Absolutely. Do I understand physician burnout and the need to step away? Definitely. I certainly do.

More and more, insurance companies, corporations, and those who flat out never went to medical school dictate how docs must practice medicine. There is a push and pull to see more patients in way less time. Insurance companies consistently deny coverage for tests patients actually need. After seeing patients all day, many spend all night replying to My Chart messages, finishing notes, and completing prior authorizations.

After at least 11 (bare minimum!!) years of education and training, burnout
is already imminent for many. Taking a break from medicine is not only normal. It can be life-saving. Docs are under pressure even after residency. It is not always easy to find a job that helps you balance medicine, real time with patients, administrative work, and a healthy work-life balance. For some, taking a break means going part-time, going fully administrative, going into education, or...stepping into another field.

Let’s respect each other’s decisions. Let’s try to understand before judging. And if you’re not a doctor and did not EXPERIENCE what it takes to become one? Let’s be kind instead of spreading condemnation. And honestly with the way this field is going…all of us may want to consider multiple streams of income❤️❤️

TIPS FOR NEW RESIDENT PHYSICIANS✨
1. Create systems (meal prep, laundry services, fitness routines, digital folders for important documents) that will make your life easier and more streamlined. Less time = more need for organization.
2. Subscribe to the podcast. Make smart money moves from day 1! I have learned sooooo much from these amazing doctors!
3. Find your time to rest, but don’t sleep every single day off. Become a tourist in your new city. Build community and find your pockets of joy. Let me know if you want my NYC to-do list!
4. Get to know your colleagues, but be careful with what you share at first. Not everyone is your friend☕️
5. If you consider yourself a content creator, be mindful about how/when/if you share that information. Many have their own hangups and preconceived notions about “medfluencers.” Do you. Get your coin. Know the social media policies of your program. And never be afraid to block people.
6. Document everything. Everything. Self-advocacy begins with proof. Forward important emails to your personal email address.
7. Have fun and learn all you can!! You’re really about to be someone’s doctor!!

Outfits lately✨I believe in always having something to look forward to: a nice dinner out, a family hangout, an art gallery tour, an author talk. For each city I’ve lived in, I’ve had a bucket list. I was only 10 or so items shy of completing my list for NYC. Atlanta has changed so much since I moved and came back. I’ve started treating myself to a new restaurant each weekend. Should I share my list? Let me know! Always have something to look forward to. Big or small. Look fashionable while doing it. That’s the message✨
