There has been a lot of noise on the internet lately about doctors taking a break from medicine. Some feel it’s an atrocity to leave the field and a complete abandonment of patients. Did I work tooth and nail to get where I am and do I LOVE what I do? Absolutely. Do I understand physician burnout and the need to step away? Definitely. I certainly do.
More and more, insurance companies, corporations, and those who flat out never went to medical school dictate how docs must practice medicine. There is a push and pull to see more patients in way less time. Insurance companies consistently deny coverage for tests patients actually need. After seeing patients all day, many spend all night replying to My Chart messages, finishing notes, and completing prior authorizations.
After at least 11 (bare minimum!!) years of education and training, burnout
is already imminent for many. Taking a break from medicine is not only normal. It can be life-saving. Docs are under pressure even after residency. It is not always easy to find a job that helps you balance medicine, real time with patients, administrative work, and a healthy work-life balance. For some, taking a break means going part-time, going fully administrative, going into education, or...stepping into another field.
Let’s respect each other’s decisions. Let’s try to understand before judging. And if you’re not a doctor and did not EXPERIENCE what it takes to become one? Let’s be kind instead of spreading condemnation. And honestly with the way this field is going…all of us may want to consider multiple streams of income❤️❤️
