๐Ÿ’ก Reinforcement doesnโ€™t just happen in therapy โ€” it starts at home. Reinforcement means rewarding positive behaviors to increase how often they happen. Whether itโ€™s verbal praise, a high-five, or a favorite activity, consistent reinforcement helps children learn what behaviors bring positive outcomes.

ABCs of ABA: L is for Latency โฑ๏ธ

Latency is the time between when an instruction is given and when the behavior begins. For example, if a therapist says, โ€œClap your hands,โ€ and the child claps after 3 seconds, thatโ€™s a latency of 3 seconds. Measuring latency helps us understand how quickly a child responds, so we can tailor supports and encourage faster, more independent responses over time.

ABCs of ABA: K is for Key Reinforcers โญ

Reinforcers are rewards that motivate children to learn and practice new skills. These can be tangible, like a sticker or toy; social, like praise or a high-five; or activities, like a favorite song or game.

๐Ÿ’ก Why it matters: The right reinforcer makes learning fun and encourages children to stay engaged. By observing what motivates each child, therapists can tailor their approach so skills are learned more quickly and with greater confidence. Key Reinforcers are a simple yet powerful part of helping children succeed in ABA therapy.

ABCs of ABA: J is for Joint Attention ๐Ÿ‘€โžก๏ธ๐Ÿ‘€ Joint attention happens when a child and another person focus on the same object or activity together.

โœ… Example: A child looks at a toy, then looks at their parent to share the experience.

๐Ÿ’ก Why it matters: Joint Attention is a critical skill for social development and communication. It helps children learn to interact, share experiences, and build meaningful connections with others. At our centers, we encourage joint attention in a variety of activities and settings to make learning natural and engaging.

ABCs of ABA: I is for Imitation ๐Ÿ‘€ Imitation is when a child copies another personโ€™s actions, sounds, or words.

โœ… Example: A therapist claps, and the child claps too.

๐Ÿ’ก Why it matters: Imitation is one of the first steps in learning. It helps children develop social skills, communication, and play behaviors. By practicing imitation in therapy, children gain confidence and learn to engage with others, which lays the foundation for more complex skills over time.

๐ŸŽ‰ Please join me in welcoming our newest team member, Laila Rogers, to the Sandy Springs Team! ๐ŸŽ‰

We are so excited to have her onboard and look forward to the incredible contributions sheโ€™ll bring to our team!

Hereโ€™s a little about Laila in his own words:

*"Hi my name is Laila Rogers. I am born and raised in Los Angeles, CA I graduated from Clark Atlanta University in 2023 with a bachelorโ€™s in Psychology, and Iโ€™ve been working as a Registered Behavior Technician since May of that year. While in college, I was drawn to the field of Applied Behavior Analysis with the help of one of my psychology professors. So I decided to become an RBT since Iโ€™ve always had a passion for helping children and supporting their growth. What I love most about this role is forming meaningful connections with the clients I work with and celebrating their progress, whether itโ€™s a big milestone or a small step forward."*

Welcome to the team, Laila! ๐ŸŒŸ Weโ€™re thrilled to have you as part of our mission and Essential family here in Sandy Springs!

ABCs of ABA: H is for Hand-Over-Hand Prompting โœ‹ This is a teaching strategy where the therapist gently guides a childโ€™s hands to complete a task.

โœ… Example: Helping a child stack blocks by guiding their hands.

๐Ÿ’ก Why it matters: Hand-over-hand prompting builds confidence by showing children exactly how to perform a skill. With time and practice, prompts fade, and independence grows.
