There is a national literacy crisis going on, among school aged black and latino children (public school), low literacy rates are as high as 80%. In some cities, up to 90% of the student population cannot read proficiently past 4th grade. The "WHYs" and "HOW COULD THESE BEs" at this point do not matter. What matters is that we all get on board and equip parents and caregivers with the knowledge they need to do something about it.
On March 5th in , I will be hosting an in-person from 12-5pm EST. This class is designed to teach parents what they need to initiate or support a literacy intervention for their struggling reader (K-3rd). On March 12th, the same class will be hosted in a web-based format from 1-6 pm EST.
Class will cover the following: > The fundamentals of phonics and practice each of the sounds (phonographs) in the English language, how to manipulate them, and how to use that information to breakdown unknown words. > Strategies on how to develop a child's ear (phonemic awareness) >Strategies on how to develop a child's vocabulary
>Strategies on how to develop a child's fluency and reading comprehension (with emphasis on using context and inferences) >Strategies on how to increase independent writing and reading
All parents will receive supplemental printed materials to follow along in class and take home. Should time allow, we will go over some paragraph writing techniques.
This class is for parents not children. We are teaching YOU how to implement techniques.
I realize four hours is a lot of time but, given the amount of material we need to cover it is the shortest class I can put together. I am offering both an local and web-based class so be sure to spread the word.
