What a fitting tribute to have Dr. Maya Angelou become the first Black woman on the U.S. quarter—she was a phenomenal woman whose comfort in her own skin made so many of us feel seen in ours.

I remember the first time I read Phenomenal Woman, and how struck I was by the affirming power of her words. She celebrated a Black woman's beauty like no one had ever dared to before. In a singular poem, she spoke to our essence, and graced us with an anthem for all women—one that uncovered our hope, our pain, our ambition, our fear.

She knew us in a way that no one else did, and she deserves this incredible honor.

Definitely worth contemplating.

Neuroscience validates that bringing our attention and intention to “the good” in our lives rewires the brain and mitigates our negativity bias (that’s evolutionarily hard-wired and not a sign of personal weakness).

Pay attention to what you love.

“Taking in the good” actually rewires our brains, pulling us away from the well developed negativity bias bringing our attention to what’s good and positive in our lives. It’s a practice.

See if you can think of one good thing you did yesterday. It may not have been very big or grandiose, maybe you smiled at somebody, maybe you listened to them, maybe you let go of some annoyance at a slow clerk in a store, maybe you forgave yourself for not saying something totally correctly, maybe you were generous, maybe you tried to meditate, maybe you thanked a bus driver.

It's not conceit or arrogance to consider these things, but it's quite nourishing, replenishing to take joy, to take delight in the good that moves through us that we can manifest.

We can be so much more accustomed to looking at what's wrong, what's negative, what's difficult. See what it's like to have turned your attention to include the good within yourself, the good within others.

This is the real truth.

STACEY DOUGAN COUNSELING & CONSULTING

As a lawyer-turned-therapist, I specialize in helping people in high-pressure careers adapt to the one thing we can count on in life: Change. While change sometimes fuels anxiety, it can also create powerful opportunities. Partnering with clients, I help them clarify concerns, identify strengths & clear away barriers to develop a roadmap that leads to welcoming change as a time of excitement and transformation. After nearly 20 years in the legal profession as both a Big Law attorney and member of senior firm management, I decided to obtain an MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling because what I enjoyed about my work most was counseling clients. Whether it was a battered woman seeking safety, corporate client posturing for litigation, or fellow partner facing malpractice claims, I have always enjoyed collaborating with people to cultivate the insight and tools necessary to solve problems and enhance their lives. Beyond the professional background and post graduate degrees, my personal experience as a woman who rose through the ranks of the legal profession while raising two sons also figures prominently into the perspective I offer to clients. As a therapist, most of my clients are busy professionals who demand a great deal from themselves: No matter how hard they try, they often feel like something's not quite right. Their experience may result in anxiety, stress, depression, relationship problems, or substance abuse. Clients may also be coping with old wounds or relationship struggles manifesting in symptoms causing them to feel stuck. Unable to find peace, meaning, or connection in the present, they come to me for help in getting back on track. In light of my personal and professional background, clients know that my appreciation for their circumstances is not theoretical - it comes from hard-earned experience. As a public speaker and presenter, I combine my leadership experience and business acumen from Big Law with my mental health background to partner with bar associations, employers, law schools, and employee assistance programs to improve the well-being of attorneys and law students.
