Coach-spiration ✨
Prentice Garrett, former SU , NFL Cheerleader & NBA Dance speaks on her experience as a Doll & the influence of her captains (Dtara & Jessica) to be disciplined & accountable at the 2024 .aux.dance.directors conference.

Question: What did you learn from your coaches?

At Southern University 2009, captains were the leaders for Dancing Dolls so their influence was paramount!

Prentice shared that practice doesn’t make perfect, it makes permanent. Every rep, every count, every clean run-through is a reflection of discipline. Through repetition and reinforcement, she learned that consistency builds confidence, and accountability keeps you growing…not just as a dancer, but as a leader.

Leaders don’t just teach the steps — they shape the standard.

Tag a teammate who taught you what sisterhood looks like. One you maybe looked up to…veteran or captain⁉️

So…let’s talk Adjudications…

First of all, when I’m in the booth I’m having a time! ✨It’s a whole party…now if I’m at the table…I obviously sit down, Just know, the job get done & I give grows & glows the entire performance! I only cut up when my recorder is on PAUSE!😆

Anywho…when yall get yall score sheets or audio notes are you getting actionable steps to fix said feedback or just feedback or things to fix??

Do you receive both GROWS & GLOWS? Surely something went right, it’s never ALL bad!

Do you let your squad listen/you read the comments out loud? -OR do you paraphrase & share the parts you want them to hear?

As an adjudicator, I’m ALWAYS talking to the dancers NOT the coach but I affirm the things I know coaches say or enforce like….conditioning, technique, hair, smiles, uniform, tights…all of these things matter! The score sheets ALWAYS has an appearance and/or overall look section!

My assumption is the coach KNOWS (or should) exactly what I’m talking about but often times the kids don’t listen. Now, in many cases the coach wants feedback OR there is no ‘trained coach’ (i.e. sponsor or advisor) so I make reference or give comments on the choreography, transitions, formations, field placements, etc in case they’re wanting that whether it’s a grow or glow!

Let’s talk about it…drop your questions or experiences with adjudications below. Judges, yall chime in too!

Unpopular Opinion: If the captain can’t hit it on the first note, NEVER MIND girl🤣! Maximize all of the music!! I don’t want a note not danced!😆

It requires very INTENTIONAL training, but it’s possible! There’s a stand routine, rock, pose, look, gesture…SOMETHING can be done on the first note! The squad knows what to do if you practice INTENTIONALLY!

Here’s Why I say this:
👉🏾Demonstrates knowledge of stand tunes (this is why band directors ask auxiliary to come to band room typically last 30min…GET FAMILIAR with the music)
👉🏾Preparedness as a captain
👉🏾Demonstration of Agility
👉🏾It’s Smart!!

So NO, I don’t want to wait til the beat drop to see you do ANYTHING!

Also, I don’t like repeats 😉…both may just be personal preference 🤷🏽‍♀️

What yall think? Yall agree or nah⁉️ Coaches, dancers…tap in below!

Signed, a former HBCU Dance captain & auxiliary coach 😘
