Children in Motion Pediatric Occupational Therapy practice specializing in sensory processing disorder

At Children In Motion we've spent the last 30+ years helping children build the skills they need to thrive in their everyday lives. Our specialty lies in the treatment of sensory processing, however we also help children who are having trouble with handwriting skills, strength & motor coordination, motor planning, balance, self regulation, social/communication skills. Additionally we collaborate on a regular basis with other professionals & schools to create materials & educational resources that can be used to build inclusive environments for uniquely wired minds. Aside from providing individual therapy, our services include parent coaching, telehealth, animal assisted therapy & animal assisted interventions, school consultations, evaluations & testing, and workshops. Our favorite motor planning strategies -

- Break the task/job in to smaller steps
- Use 'first this, then that' language
- Provide extra time for your child to process, react, or adjust
- Provide your child with the plan, then demonstrate or model the plan (show them how to do it)
- Identify the problem & provide the solution
- Give them the first step ('I have an idea..', or use a visual chart)

Keep in mind that motor planning requires a lot of practice & repetition to improve. Don't withhold help from your child - they need help learning the pattern to be able to carry out the pattern themselves in the future.

Moving for Success: Our Story

Hello! I’m Michaelene Kearney and I’m the founding OT behind Children In Motion. I grew up in the Chicago area- Lombard, IL. I have three girls, three pups, and believe you can never have too much wine! I founded CIM because I love enabling children to be their best selves. It’s our mission at Children In Motion to empower children to thrive at home, in school, and in their communities. I love getting to know every child I work with and being able to problem solve solutions with them and their families.

As you can see, pictured above with me is one of my pups, Sadie, who I trained to be CIM’s very own therapy dog. She comes to my gym once a week and also is a huge part of our reading program Bark Buddies. Want to know more about us? Go check out our website at www.childreninmotion.com
