Can Allergies Cause Nasal Polyps?
While allergies themselves do not directly cause nasal polyps, they can contribute to the chronic inflammation of the nasal and sinus linings that predisposes individuals to the development of polyps. Allergic rhinitis or hay fever can cause prolonged inflammation and swelling of the nasal mucosa, which can lead to polyp growth if the condition becomes chronic. People with asthma and allergic conditions are often more susceptible to developing nasal polyps.
Managing allergies is a crucial part of preventing the formation or worsening of nasal polyps. This may involve avoiding known allergens, using antihistamines or corticosteroids to control allergic reactions, and regular saline nasal irrigation to reduce the inflammation. In cases where allergies are identified as a significant factor, targeted allergy treatments like immunotherapy might also be recommended.
