Happy National Squirrel Appreciation Day! 🐿️ If you’ve been following along, you know our mascot, Earl the Squirrel. He reminds us that curiosity, agility, and preparation are not just traits of squirrels; they are qualities that drive intrepid research and meaningful impact.

To increase awareness and appreciation, here are some fun facts you may not know about these common but fascinating creatures!
1. There are “ground squirrels” and “tree squirrels”. While the two are not mutually exclusive, ground squirrels build burrows underground, while tree squirrels build their nests in trees.
2. Squirrels can be deceptive! Oftentimes, thieves will find their caches of buried nuts. Tree squirrels have been known to throw off thieves by digging holes and covering them, without depositing any nuts.
3. Squirrels were once a rare sight in U.S. cities, until cities decided to build more parks and add squirrels too!
Appreciate your favorite backyard squirrels today, but be careful to only feed them treats from their natural diet!

Today, we honor a man who moved the world with a dream and a voice. May we continue to walk toward the light of justice. As we reflect on Dr. King’s legacy, we are reminded that our greatest strength lies in our unity. We are proud to stand with our community today and every day in pursuit of a fairer, more inclusive future.

We heard 2026 is the new #2016! We at KDHRC can appreciate a little nostalgia, and we look back at 2016 fondly. However, we appreciate how far we have come in the past 10 years!
Back then, we had an awesome office space in Atlanta, which we have since closed and become a fully remote company since COVID-19. While we sometimes miss our office space (that had an air hockey table!), we acknowledge that for our mission to be successful, we did not need an office space, just an amazing team of intrepid scholars and ! Much has changed in the past decade, including our logo, but we remain steadfast in our mission to turn science into impact. Let us know in the comments what 2016 trend you want to see make a comeback!

This month, we are celebrating Dexter Cooper and 6 years of incredible work with KDHRC! Dexter is our Senior Program Manager, and he joined our team in January 2020, right before we were forced to close our office and transition to a fully remote team due to COVID-19. Swipe through the slides to reminisce with us on Dexter’s first day in office, and read some fun facts about that day:
•While in-person, KDHRC always had mimosas (and Chick-fil-A minis) to welcome new staffers!
•About two months later, we all left the office due to COVID-19 and never went back.
•The kitchen czar was the sign-up sheet to keep our shared space neat – now every KDHRCer is responsible for their OWN coffee cups!
Thank you, Dexter, for all your hard work and dedication to KDHRC!

KDHRC is Newsworthy!
Our friends at the Midtown High School (Atlanta) newspaper, , just published a story about PATH-S, an app we developed and are currently evaluating! PATH-S caught the eye of the Southerner because many Midtown students are participating in the evaluation, and apparently, it’s the talk of campus!
PATH-S uses casual gaming and intermittent reinforcement techniques to encourage teens to adopt & persist with personalized habits to improve sleep duration. Check out the article at the link in our bio! Thank you to the student who wrote this article and those who are participating in PATH-S!
