Today is National Caregiver Appreciation Day, and we at KDHRC are not strangers to the often silent work that caregivers do. To quote Rosalynn Carter, “There are only four kinds of people in the world: those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers.” Send some love to the caregivers you know, and let them know their work is appreciated today and every day.

KDHRC would like to reintroduce our KDHRC Nerd of the Month Club, inspired, of course, by the Jelly of the Month Club from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation!
Each month, we will shout out a person we greatly admire due to their scientific prowess, worldly contributions, and courage. They will be dubbed an official member of the KDHRC Nerd of the Month Club!
Joining the club this month, we recognize Dr. Margaret McFarland, an esteemed Child Psychologist and mentor to Mister Rogers. Dr. McFarland was a professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry, where she helped establish the Department of Child Development and Child Care in the early 1950’s. She co-founded the Arsenal Family and Children’s Center with Drs. Benjamin Spock and Erik Erikson and served as director until 1971. Mister Rogers studied under Dr. McFarland at the center during his time at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.
Mister Rogers described Dr. McFarland as “the most major influence in my professional life”. For nearly 22 years, they met frequently to discuss and brainstorm themes for the television series, “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood”. She shared stories of children and families to incorporate child development theory in the messages of Mister Rogers’ program.
We are honored to share the work of this unsung hero and to welcome her into KDHRC’s Nerd of the Month club. Dr. Margaret McFarland is an inspiration through her contributions to child psychology and the classic children’s program we all know and love.
DM us your nominations for our next official member of KDHRC’s Nerd of the Month club!

International LEGO Day commemorates the day in 1958 when the patent for the LEGO brick system was filed. Many of our staff members are collectors and builders themselves, so we celebrated LEGO day by putting together a staff photo – with everyone represented as a LEGO minifigure! LEGOs create big, beautiful things through small pieces assembled with persistence – something that speaks to KDHRC’s corporate values. So Happy International LEGO day from KDHRC!
