Get to Know Me:
I have been teaching yoga for over 8 years full time and am chronically ill. I got sick a few years ago and was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and M.E. Most days it's painful to walk around the block (if I even have the energy to). I have joint pai
n 24/7 and juggle a variety of other symptoms. I only teach practices that don't make my pain worse and that I would take if someone else was leading them. I have a bachelor's in Exercise and Health Science which influences my approach to teaching. There's a reason behind everything I do and always look to the research for techniques proven to reduce stress, pain, etc. That said I also honor and respect the lineage of yoga by weaving in philosophy and mythology. It's important to remember the yogi's have known so much that science is just starting to catch up to. Where to Practice with Me:
Currently all of my offerings are virtual. I post yoga classes on an app called Sunroom. It's free to download and monthly membership is 9.99
Each month I create a collection of classes to fit the time of year. 15 posts launch on the first of each month. About My Classes:
The practices range from 5-30 minutes. No classes are done standing or taught in a typical yoga format. All classes are done seated and/or lying down. *A class or two in each collection might have some kneeling and very very rarely I will add a super gentle 5 minute standing practice. The focus of my classes is calming your nervous system, moving without making any chronic pain worse, relieving anxiety, as well as gentle strengthening and stretching. My classes are thoughtfully designed for chronically ill and disabled students as well as beginners, seniors and lovers of mindfulness and meditation. Class Descriptions:
I find it very important to clearly state the details of a class because you should know upfront if it's accessible to you or not. I always create classes with accessibility as a core foundation but even people with the same condition might need something different so I tell you what's included to empower you and help you feel confident in the class so you can start practicing with ease. Each class description ends with an accessibility note that tells you the following...
- Movement Categories (seated, lying down, etc)
- Duration (for the over all class as well for a particular section of class like kneeling)
- Movement Pace (to the breath, held for 5 breaths, etc)
- Body Focus (hips, shoulders, back, etc.)
- And Props Required (blanket, wall space, pillows, etc.) I also always encourage my students to tell me if they need accessibility in another way I am not currently providing or that they want to see more of. I always try my very best to make it happen.
