Physician Specialists in Anesthesia was founded in 1979 by Dr. Stan Mogelnicki and Dr. Donn Chambers when Saint Joseph's Hospital of Atlanta moved from its historic site in downtown Atlanta to the new location in suburban northern Atlanta. Mogelnicki and Chambers assembled a small group of talented cardiovascular anesthesiologists which became the nucleus of the present-day group. Owing to its primary practice location at Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital, the group maintains as its primary areas of expertise the fields of cardiovascular and thoracic anesthesia with emphasis on invasive hemodynamic monitoring and perioperative echocardiography. Other areas of special expertise include critical care medicine, regional anesthesia, acute pain management, and anesthesia for specialty surgery (general, orthopaedic, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, and geriatric). We have broadened our expertise over the past four decades to include outpatient anesthesia and the management of ambulatory surgery center anesthesia departments. Through the use of optimum staffing models, continuous quality improvement, best practices, and a strong cost containment culture, PSA has helped organizations provide the highest quality ambulatory surgical product, while being fiscally responsible.

PSA has been a loyal and long-time supporter of the Mercy Care mission, donating for the past 30 years consecutively. In these last few years, we have adopted the Street Medicine Program as our primary focus within the Foundation.

The Street Medicine team provides much need medical care to the city’s homeless and underserved people—literally, on the streets. Some of us in the group have had the privilege to participate and witness their great work first hand. Their skill, compassion, and dedication to the mission are truly amazing.

Last year, we were able to donate over $13,000 to Mercy Care Street Medicine. Our goal this year is to raise $15,000.

We just wanted to give a small public thank you to everyone who has helped support us and Emory St Joseph's Hospital of Atlanta during this crisis. Owing to its primary practice location at Saint Joseph's Hospital, the group maintains as its primary areas of expertise the fields of cardiovascular and thoracic anesthesia with emphasis on invasive hemodynamic monitoring and perioperative echocardiography. Other areas of special expertise include cardiac transplantation, critical care medicine, and anesthesia for specialty surgery (general, orthopaedic, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, otolaryngology, and neurosurgery). PSA has always enjoyed a strong local reputation in acute, chronic, and cancer pain management, as well as in interventional pain management including radio frequency ablation, spinal cord stimulation, intradiscal electrothermal therapy (IDET), implanted epidural & intrathecal drug delivery systems. We have broadened our expertise over the past decade to include outpatient anesthesia and the management of ambulatory surgery center anesthesia departments.
