Psychiatry word of the week is……Dissociation!!!
Dissociation is the mind’s way of coping when emotions or experiences feel too overwhelming. It can show up as feeling detached from your body, your thoughts, or the world around you. While it may feel confusing or scary, dissociation is a protective response. With awareness, support, and the right tools, you can learn to stay grounded and feel more present in your life.
Have you ever experienced dissociation? Let me know your experience in the comments

Ever walked into a place and felt like you’ve been there before—even though you know you haven’t? That strange, familiar feeling is called déjà vu.
It happens when your brain briefly mixes up the signals between memory and the present moment. It’s usually harmless and very common. Most people experience it at least once in their lives.
Have you ever experienced it? Type in the comments below

Understanding the “Cluster A” personality disorders—Paranoid, Schizoid, and Schizotypal—is the first step toward breaking the stigma. These are often categorized by “odd or eccentric” patterns of thinking and relating to the world.
Let’s prioritize clinical understanding over labels.

• Paranoid: Characterized by pervasive distrust and suspicion of others.
• Schizoid: Defined by a detachment from social relationships and limited emotional expression.
• Schizotypal: Marked by eccentric behavior, discomfort with close relationships, and cognitive or perceptual distortions.

Our psychiatry word of this week is… Let’s Talk Akathisia
That inner “I gotta move” feeling might be akathisia.
Akathisia is a neuropsychiatric syndrome that can occur as an adverse effect of antipsychotic medications and manifests as psychomotor restlessness
It’s not anxiety. It’s not impatience.
It’s a real medication-related movement disorder—and it can be incredibly distressing.
If someone looks restless, pacing, or constantly shifting, lead with curiosity and compassion and do a medication overview.

Let’s Talk Schizotypal Personality Disorder
Think eccentric behavior, odd beliefs, social anxiety, and perceptual distortions — without frank psychosis.
Often misread. Frequently stigmatized. Clinically important.
Symptoms are pervasive and lifelong, not episodic.

Feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or spiraling? Pause with me.
Try the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique 🌿

👀 5 things you can see
✋🏽 4 things you can feel
👂🏽 3 things you can hear
👃🏽 2 things you can smell
👅 1 thing you can taste

This brings your mind out of the spiral and back into the present moment.
Anxiety lives in the what ifs—grounding brings you back to the right now.
Save this for later

Psychiatry word of the week = Mania
Mania is a medical symptom seen in bipolar disorder
It can look like:
• Little to no sleep but feeling energized
• Racing thoughts or nonstop talking
• Risky spending, impulsive decisions
• Feeling unusually confident or invincible
• Irritability when slowed down

Mania can feel powerful at first—but it often leads to crashes, consequences, and exhaustion.

📌 If this sounds familiar, a mental health professional can help.
