The 30th anniversary of The Americans with Disabilities Act was July 26th. The ADA is a significant civil rights law put in place to protect people with disabilities from discrimination and afford everyone equal opportunities. As we live through a pandemic and reckon with civil rights issues in this country, it’s important to keep in mind that not everyone has similar experiences to us on a daily basis. Issues like chronic illness and mental health struggles are not things seen on the surface of an individual but do impact daily functioning. For instance, wearing a mask has become divisive but wearing one goes a long way in protecting those whose struggle is not visible to us. If we all put in the effort to understand others more fully, we can make the world a better more inclusive place. Art by
