The 30th anniversary of The Americans with Disabilities Act was July 26th. The ADA is a significant civil rights law put in place to protect people with disabilities from discrimination and afford everyone equal opportunities. As we live through a pandemic and reckon with civil rights issues in this country, it’s important to keep in mind that not everyone has similar experiences to us on a daily basis. Issues like chronic illness and mental health struggles are not things seen on the surface of an individual but do impact daily functioning. For instance, wearing a mask has become divisive but wearing one goes a long way in protecting those whose struggle is not visible to us. If we all put in the effort to understand others more fully, we can make the world a better more inclusive place. Art by

As a therapist, I try my best to be understanding and empathetic to everyone who walks in my door. I also try and do my best to be respectful of everyone’s varied experience, but I also know that as a white person there is a limit to what I’m able to understand due to my own privilege. I will always work hard to be culturally competent and I am honored to work with anyone that seeks me out, but I also understand that maybe a white therapist isn’t what people of color want or need right now. There is a link in my bio of a list of resources compiled by of that I wanted to pass a long to provide support. I will always be here to help but maybe this is the best way I can help right now.

We are almost into the third month of the year, so I think it’s a good opportunity for a goals check for the year. Have yours fallen apart? Or are you making good progress? I know I’ve neglected the social media aspect of my business, so this is me jumping back in and doing better!

I have needed a lot more reminders to breathe lately. I’ve been the busiest I’ve ever been as a therapist and that’s great, but also stressful. I’ve felt a weight on my chest that seems to only lessen with a few deep breaths. Always remember to breathe through the stress, good or bad, stress is stress. .

Reaching the point where we realize all we can control is ourselves and our response to things is incredibly freeing. We are able to let go and move through life in a less burdened way.

We have to go through hard things in order to be able to access the knowledge and beauty that comes after that life experience. It can really suck to go through it, but it’s always important to know there will be a moment where you are able to gain perspective and feel at peace. Maybe “no rain, no flowers” can be a helpful mantra for all of us!

There will be things in life we won’t have 100% certainty on, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take the leap. I’m a firm believer in the energy you put in is the energy you get out. Even if we aren’t totally ready for something sometimes it’s more important to put that good energy in in order to achieve what we want!

To me, this is what therapy is all about. It’s so liberating to be able to finally put to words how we’ve been feeling and why, it helps us to feel more in control. Once we have the words then we can start to find solutions and help ourselves.

Sometimes we have to give ourselves credit for making an attempt the week before a long weekend. I felt like this little puppy this week, but I’m looking forward to taking some time this long week and helping myself to relax and reset. Hope you make time for yourself too! .
