you risk your peace.
you risk your time.
you risk your money.
you risk your rest.
you risk your mental health.
you risk your friendships.
you risk your future.
you risk your body.
you risk your life.

boundaries start with you. they are rooted in your needs, your values, your wants, your challenges, your insecurities, your core beliefs. as those things change, so will some of (or a lot of) your boundary practices.

some will remain stable and some will be more fluid. some will repeat themselves over and over and some you may only need to enforce once or twice in your lifetime.

they require your input. they require your honesty. they require your flexibility. they require your understanding and your curiosity.

this work really isn’t about other people, even if you try to make it so. be mindful of using others as a way to avoid your own responsibility to yourself to evolve.

I’m not frontin’ anymore, y’all. Pretending to be well leads to and perpetuates illness.

Performative functioning can lead to dysfunction.

This practice, of course, is filtered through boundaries, relationship dynamics, access to your own vulnerabilities, sense of connection with others, emotional bandwidth, etc. What we realize over time is that our protective pretending can become so widespread that eventually, no one hears your truth; no one gets in; which means no one can support you effectively.

What are you willing to be more honest about?

It can be really beneficial to have a space where you can show up “as is” especially if your life demands performance and for Black folks, the “respectability politics” of it all.

I love providing a space where clients can meet me in their messy, unfiltered, unabridged selves to that not only I get to know them, THEY get to know themselves deeper.

Now, there has to be SOME boundaries in the room to maintain therapeutic safety, but those certainly ain't the ones we learned in school!

Do your psychotherapy sessions come with any rules as a therapist? Or if you've been a client?

04/06/2026

psychotherapy can be a lot of things to different people. psychotherapy IS different for different people. based on the therapist, the client, the need that day, that week, that month; no 2 sessions are the same.

How would you describe how some of your recent sessions have felt? I'll go first in the comments:

When do you feel your most authentic?
What amazes you these days?
Who are you under the accomplishments?
