When schools change, everything around them does too.

At the 2026 DeKalb County School District “Forward Together” State of the District, Interim Superintendent Dr. Norman C. Sauce III addressed both progress and real challenges shaping the future of the district.

The conversation included a major Student Assignment Plan and consolidation efforts, with proposed school closures and repurposing aimed at improving facility use and long-term sustainability. Alongside these decisions, the district is working to rebuild community trust while strengthening student performance across the board.

There’s also a clear financial lens — with the FY 2026 budget projecting $612M in revenue against $582.9M in expenditures, highlighting both opportunity and responsibility in how resources are managed.

And while big decisions are being made, moments of celebration remain just as important — including the recognition of five Teachers of the Year, honoring the people who continue to show up for students every day.

At HCES, we understand that decisions like these go beyond policy. They impact families, access to education, and the overall health of a community.

💬 How do you think changes like this affect a community long-term?

Scrolling keeps you informed… but it doesn’t create impact.

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or stuck in the cycle of constant news, stress, and social media noise — you’re not alone. But real change in your community, mental health, and daily life doesn’t come from consuming more… it comes from doing something with what you already know.

Public health isn’t just hospitals and policies — it’s connection, access to resources, supporting local businesses, volunteering, and showing up for people in real life.

Checking on someone can protect mental health.
Sharing resources can change someone’s situation.
Supporting local keeps communities alive.
Giving your time builds stronger systems.
Choosing peace over chaos protects your energy.

This is how community health, mental wellness, and real impact actually happen — not just online, but in everyday actions.

Log off for a moment… then come back with intention.

Public health is shaped by people — the ones who speak up, build solutions, and challenge systems to do better.

This National Public Health Week, we’re highlighting voices that continue to influence how we think about health, equity, and community. Their words remind us that public health is not just about care — it’s about access, prevention, and creating conditions where people can truly thrive.

At HCES, this work shows up every day through the people we serve and the systems we help strengthen.

Your future shouldn’t be limited by what you don’t know.

Every year, students miss out on scholarships, grants, and resources simply because they didn’t have access to the right information at the right time. That’s why guidance like this matters.

From FAFSA to Georgia-specific programs like HOPE, to national scholarship platforms, there are real pathways to make college more affordable — but it takes intention, consistency, and awareness.

At HCES, we believe access to education is a public health issue. When young people are supported, informed, and equipped, it creates stronger outcomes not just for individuals — but for entire communities.

🎓 Save this. Share this. Send it to a senior who needs it.

There’s a lot of conversation right now about AI replacing jobs.

But there are entire fields — especially in public health, community support, and human services — where the work goes far beyond automation.

Showing up for families. Supporting youth. Responding in real time. Building trust in communities. Navigating complex systems when people need it most.

That kind of work requires presence, empathy, judgment, and care — things technology can support, but not replace.

At HCES, this is what we do every day.

And we encourage others to step into work that makes a real, lasting impact — because communities will always need people who show up.

HCES Speaks 🗣️

Transportation isn’t just about getting from point A to point B — it’s about access to care.

Transportation barriers are one of the top reasons people miss medical and counseling appointments. When someone can’t reliably get to a doctor, therapist, or support service, small gaps turn into bigger health challenges over time.

That’s why transportation is a critical part of the work we do at HCES. Through our partnerships with Georgia DFCS and community agencies, we help remove this barrier by supporting families with reliable transport to appointments, services, and resources that keep care continuous and outcomes stronger.

Access isn’t optional. It’s foundational. And when systems work better, people do too.

Black history is often told through struggle — but joy has always been part of the story, too.

Joy reduces stress. Community strengthens health. Representation builds hope. These are not soft ideas — they are public health truths.

This month and every month, we honor Black joy as a source of resilience, healing, and power. Because thriving is part of the work.

Send this to a 2026 or upcoming grad who needs to hear this.

At GWC 2026, Dr. Bruce James reminded graduates that leadership doesn’t start with a title — it starts with a decision to serve, to show up, and to keep going even when the path isn’t clear. This moment celebrated more than accomplishments. It honored resilience, purpose, and the courage it takes to step into what’s next.

With $15,000 in scholarships awarded this year, bringing the total investment in young leaders to $55,000, this wasn’t just a ceremony — it was a commitment to the future being built right now.

To every graduate finding their way: your story matters, your voice matters, and your next step counts!

Heart health is shaped by more than what we eat or how often we exercise.

Chronic stress can strain the heart in ways similar to smoking. Lack of sleep can raise blood pressure and increase the workload on your heart. And loneliness or social isolation can increase the risk of heart disease by nearly 30%. These factors often go unnoticed, but they matter — and they’re deeply connected to how we live, work, and care for one another.

This American Heart Month, we’re encouraging conversations that go beyond the surface. Protecting heart health means prioritizing rest, managing stress, and staying connected — not just individually, but as communities.

If you’re looking for support or more information, explore resources from the American Heart Association at heart.org, the CDC’s heart health tools at cdc.gov/heartdisease, and mental health support through 988lifeline.org.

Taking care of your heart is also about taking care of your life.

Rich in life because we get to show up for a job that fills gaps when systems are stretched thin.

For us, that means showing up for young people when resources are limited and the stakes are high. It looks like supporting programs that protect children, investing in education when access isn’t guaranteed, and stepping in so families and youth don’t have to carry the weight alone.

Whether it’s strengthening partnerships, supporting child welfare efforts, or investing in opportunities that help students thrive in and beyond the classroom, the work is about creating stability where it’s needed most. That’s the kind of impact that matters — and the kind of work that makes this mission worth showing up for every day.

This Valentine’s Day, we’re celebrating a kind of love that doesn’t always get cards or flowers — the love shown by caregivers.

Caregivers show up with patience, compassion, and consistency. They hold space for others, support families through hard moments, and often put their own needs last while caring for everyone else. That kind of love matters. It protects well-being, strengthens communities, and keeps systems moving when they’re under strain.

Today, we honor the caregivers who give so much of themselves — and we’re reminding them that their care deserves care, too.

💬 Take a moment to tag a caregiver you appreciate or send a message of thanks today.
