Everyone is going bananas over the "new food pyramid" just released. What's the deal?
β€ΌοΈβ‰οΈπŸŒπŸŒπŸŒβ‰οΈβ€ΌοΈ
There are new dietary guidelines released in the U.S. every 5 years. Sometimes the graphics for nutrition education are updated as well. We had a food guide pyramid, then a different pyramid, then the MyPlate, and now this pyramid (or cone or triangle, depending on how you look at it). The bottom line is that the actual recommendations for balanced nutrition have not changed much.

We need food from all 6 food groups to be healthy! Choose a variety of foods & follow your body's natural cues. If you need help personalizing your nutrition plan, please see a Registered Dietitian. Be careful about too much caffeine! It's not good for your heart. Black drinks (coffee, black tea, cola) can also interfere with vitamin & mineral absorption. Keep caffeinated and/or dark fluids to about 16 ounces daily. Try decaf or half-caf coffee, decaf black or green tea, or red/rooibos tea (pictured) which does not have caffeine. Be sure to get other fluids throughout the day - water, flavored water, milk, or 100% fruit juice.

On location at the Damascus Yeti 50! Our runner is doing the 55K today. It's cloudy & rainy, & hydration is key. When it's hot, it's easy to fall behind on hydration & also easier to remember to drink because it's hot. When it's cooler, it can be harder to remember to drink enough. Bottom line: Always pay attention to hydration!
