✨ Language Milestones for 2-Year-Olds ✨
At age two, little ones are growing into BIG communicators! Here are some common language milestones we look for around this age:

🗣️ Vocabulary boom: 50+ words and growing
🧩 Two-word phrases: “More juice,” “Mama help,” “Go outside”
👂 Understands simple directions: “Get your shoes,” “Come sit here”
👋 Uses gestures + words: pointing, waving, showing objects
🐶 Names familiar items: animals, body parts, toys
🗨️ Starting to ask simple questions: “What’s that?”

Every child develops at their own pace — but if you’re unsure about your toddler’s speech and language, early support makes a big difference.

Come party with us 🎄🎉

Our Christmas party is a language-rich and FUN environment for our clients. We will make crafts, snacks, and play games. The party focuses on building vocabulary, practicing language skills, and working on social skills. All abilities are welcome!

When: 12/20 10-11am
Where: Buckhead Speech Specialists office
Who: Ages 3-7
Price: $40 per child

Welcome to the Buckhead Speech team, Diane!! 👋

Diane earned her bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Georgia in 2022 and completed her master’s in Communication Sciences and Disorders at Georgia State University in 2024. She has experience working with both children and adults and enjoys supporting children as they grow their speech and language skills.

When she’s not in the therapy room, you can find her teaching Pure Barre, exploring new restaurants around Atlanta, or enjoying walks outside.

Diane is excited to support families in the community by helping children develop strong speech and language skills!

At Buckhead Speech Specialists, we love turning holiday fun into meaningful language practice—and our Elf on the Shelf is the perfect helper! Each morning’s surprise gives children a natural opportunity to practice WH questions: “Where is the elf?”, “What is he doing?”, “Who is with him?”, and even “Why do you think he chose that spot?”

By connecting these questions to something visual, silly, and exciting, our elf helps kids strengthen comprehension and expressive language skills in a playful, low-pressure way. A little holiday magic goes a long way in supporting communication! 🎄✨

✨Did you know children learn SO much through play? ✨

This sweet kiddo isn’t “just playing” with cars and animals—he’s building important speech and language skills! 🚗🐑

👉 Rolling a car can teach action words like “go, stop, fast, slow.”
👉 Animal toys build vocabulary and sounds (“baa,” “sheep,” “farm”).
👉 Pretend play helps kids learn to problem-solve, take turns, and grow their imagination.

🚨 Is your child’s vocabulary stuck? Let’s troubleshoot! 🚨

If a child isn’t adding new single words—even after consistent speech therapy or at-home practice—it might be time to take a closer look. 👀 This happens with late talkers all the time, and it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. It just means we may need to tweak our approach.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself:

✨ Are we expecting too much too soon? Sometimes time and consistency are the key ingredients.
✨ Are we trying to work on too many words at once? Less is more—start small!
✨ Is there too little practice (or maybe too much 😅)? Find the sweet spot where practice is fun and doable.
✨ Are the words just too hard right now? Pick ones that match your child’s current speech sounds.

💬 MOST late talkers learn to talk—and many autistic kids do too! 🧠 The process just takes time, patience, and the right support.

🎉Slides aren’t just for fun—they’re for language building too! 🛝🗣️

Next time you’re at the playground, try these speech and language strategies while sliding:

✨ Core words: Say “go,” “stop,” “again,” and “up” to build early vocabulary.
🧠 Requesting: Encourage your child to say “slide please!” or use gestures/signs.
👀 Turn-taking: Practice social skills with “my turn” and “your turn.”
📣 Commenting: Model fun phrases like “Wheee!” “So fast!” “That was fun!”
🤸 Action words: Talk about climbing, sliding, running, waiting, etc.

Play is powerful—and language learning happens everywhere! 💬💕
